Rahul Gandhi meets members of European Parliament in Brussels, Manipur situation among topics discussed

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi held closed-door meetings with some members of the European Parliament (MEPs) in Brussels on Thursday, marking the start of his three-nation European tour. The human rights situation in Manipur was among the topics that were raised during his meetings in the Belgian capital. This comes against the backdrop of a resolution entitled ‘India, the situation in Manipur’ which had been adopted by the European Parliament in July. The discussions in Brussels, which were not listed on the official parliamentary agenda of the day, were described as successful by Opposition party sources. India in the past has said that the Indian authorities at all levels, including the judiciary, are well aware of the situation in Manipur and are taking steps to maintain peace and harmony and law and order. “The European Parliament would be well advised to utilise its time more productively on its internal issues,” Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Arindam Bagchi said in J

Niti Aayog predicts Indian agro-chemical industry growth over 9 per cent notwithstanding Chinese competition

Niti Aayog member Ramesh Chand said that India’s agrochemical industry has the potential to grow more than the current nine per cent notwithstanding the competition from China. The Indian industry needs to pay attention to this aspect that many Western countries are shifting from agrochemicals to biopesticides, he said. Chand urged the Agro Chem Federation of India (ACFI) to come out with a document on ease of doing business in agrochemicals. The Niti Aayog member was addressing a panel discussion on the occasion of the sixth annual general meeting of ACFI in the national capital on Wednesday. “The agrochemical industry has achieved a miracle growth of nine per cent… much of this growth rate has happened during the Covid-19 pandemic years when the production activities were seriously disrupted,” he said. Despite economic and production disruptions, the domestic agrochemical industry had shown impressive growth between 2017-18 and 2022-23, he added. That apart, India’s exports hav

Bharat row: 'If we get requests like that, we consider them as they come', says UN spokesperson

The United Nations considers requests from nations seeking name changes whenever such requests are submitted, a high-ranking official at the organisation said. This statement comes in the midst of a controversy surrounding President Droupadi Murmu’s G20 dinner invitations, which identified her as the ‘President of Bharat’ instead of the ‘President of India.’ Farhan Haq, the Deputy Spokesperson for UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres cited the example of Turkey changing its name to Turkiye last year. “Well, in the case of Turkiye, we responded to a formal request delivered to us by the Government. Obviously, if we get requests like that, we consider them as they come,” he said in response to a question on reports that India’s name could be changed to Bharat. A row erupted in India on Tuesday after invitations for a G20 dinner were sent out by President Murmu, describing her position as ‘President of Bharat’ instead of the customary ‘President of India’, with the opposition accusin

‘Stay away and do not comment’: PM Modi tells his ministers amid Bharat-India row

Amid the ‘Bharat-Vs-India’ political row, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday asked his ministers to refrain from commenting on the issue. “Do not comment,” the PM is believed to have said at a meeting of the Council of Ministers where G20 and other issues were discussed. This is the first time PM Modi is learnt to have discussed the subject with his ministers. Over the last 24 hours, the Opposition has held two back-to-back meetings to chalk out a strategy for the issue. On Wednesday morning, former Congress chief Sonia Gandhi wrote to PM Modi, suggesting a list of nine subjects that can be discussed at the special session of Parliament beginning on September 18. The Centre, however, has reacted sharply, suggesting that the senior Congress leader does not pay attention to tradition, under which the agenda need not be discussed before the session begins. “After the calling of the session by the President and before commencement of the session, there is a meeting of the leade
