Seven militants, including Ansar Ghazwatul Hind chief, killed in two gunfights in Kashmir's Shopian, Pulwama

Image
Srinagar: One chilly February evening, on a day when the Indian government was hosting a foreign delegation to demonstrate 'normalcy' in Kashmir, the city's peace and calm was broken by a shooting incident right outside an iconic eatery in a posh area merely 200 metres from the hotel where envoys were lodged. Militants shot and killed the son of the owner of Krishna Dhaba, a famous vegetarian restaurant that is a favourite haunt for non-locals, tourists and pilgrims. The attack resulted into a flurry of activity within the police department: Frequent police crackdowns, which had become a thing of the past following years of a lull in militancy here, started once again; people were constantly frisked, vehicles were searched, and metal barricades sprung up. Less than two months later on Friday, the government forces killed seven militants including Imtiyaz Shah, the chief of Ansar Ghazwatul Hind (AGH), an Al-qaeda affiliate in Kashmir, in two separate gunfights in southe

West Bengal women speak about poll promises made for widows and female head of family

Image
West Bengal women expressed their opinion on Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Trinamool Congress (TMC) manifesto promises made towards women. Firstpost went around Kolkata to pose two choices to the women voters. They were asked whether they felt BJP's Rs 3,000 monthly support for widows or TMC's promise to offer a basic monthly support of Rs 500 to Rs 1000 for female head of family felt like a better choice. Most agreed that a system needs to be put in place, to let the funds trickle down to the women who actually need it. The choices for the women are personal, but the conclusion is clear; give the needy funds, but after making sure they are not hiding their financial condition and hogging the money they don't actually need. TASMAC Special: Can alcohol be banned in Tamil Nadu?

Image
All major political parties in Tamil Nadu have promised complete ban on liquor in a phased manner in their respective manifestos, ahead of the April 6 assembly elections. Firstpost visited liquor stores (operated by government owned TASMAC) around Chennai to talk to people about how feasible this promise is. Both single window liquor outlets and elite liquor outlets were covered. Voters dissect manifesto promises of political parties from Tamil Nadu

Image
Elections are all about what is each political party offering to the voters and what is attracting public attention. So, this time around, we asked voters from Chennai about the election manifesto promises and guess what, their responses were brutally open and scathing. “We will vote. We won’t waste our votes. But, why these unnecessary promises?” says Lakshmi, a domestic worker. Voters that Firstpost spoke to, touched upon crucial points that political parties seem to brush under the carpet, that is, are their promises doable? They do not fail to highlight the glaring gap between promises made and the ground reality. Sujatha, a social worker, says, “We have seen many elections. But, there’s no change in people’s lives." Will ‘Covid Food Kits’ be an important factor in Kerala elections?

Image
An election during a pandemic definitely calls for a question on how the incumbent government fared during the peak times of the health crisis in the state. Focusing on the supply of essential items to people during the Covid 19 lockdown, the author and his team went across four districts in Kerala - Alappuzha, Thrissur, Kasargod, Wayanad – and asked people about it. One of the main aspects that was reiterated by many, was the everyday supply of food kits by the CPI (M) to people across these districts. While some felt that this move never left anyone hungry in the state, and that they could manage to survive because of it, many felt the government could do better than just food supplies or could have given at least quality, edible food. “We want connectivity to this village and a resolution to frequent flooding here. We don't want just kits,” said a voter who felt that the government could not just do bare minimum and earn votes. Watch the video to see how people responded.

From PM Modi’s Kerala rally: People talk about ‘Love Jihad’

Image
One of the highlights of BJP’s poll promises in Kerala is to bring in a special law to contain Love Jihad. To understand how love jihad stands out as an election issue for BJP supporters, we spoke to people from one such rally of PM Modi in Thiruvananthapuram. Many believed that love jihad is a threat to both, Hindus and Christians in Kerala and that it is a “public secret” here. “I expect it to become a topic of discussion in this election,” said a voter. Watch the full video to know what love jihad is to some voters in Kerala. Video is edited by Pavel Nalini Natarajan from Firstpost India Latest News https://ift.tt/2PHpA0O Nevin Thomas

Bangla for Bengal: Can secularism trump regional linguistic pride?

Image
West Bengal voters had a lot to say on Bangla as a compulsory language. Among manifesto promises made to West Bengal, in the education sphere, TMC proposed a more secular approach to attract more students to Bengal. BJP on the other hand said they would make Bangla (or Bengali) compulsory for students till Class X. We asked voters in West Bengal without telling them which party proposed which policy. The choice was almost unanimous. Watch the video to know what Bengal has to say on this promise in the education sector.

Apparently, Indians pay attention to nothing unless it’s turned into a festival. Diwali, Durga Puja, Dussehra, Eid, Christmas, and Kumbh Mela, the mother of all festivals, are clearly not enough. We added turned IPL into India ka tyohar . We probably have the most literary festivals in the world. Other countries have run-of-the-mill elections. India, we have been told again and again  has a “festival of democracy” Therefore it’s hardly surprising that in the middle of the second wave of COVID-19, the prime minister wants the good citizens of India to have themselves a tika utsav or a vaccination festival. In his speech, Narendra Modi suggested that a tika utsav between 11 and 14 April could boost the vaccination drive. Also, 11 April happens to be the birth anniversary of social reformer Jyotiba Phule while 14 April is that of Babasaheb Ambedkar. This could be some strategist’s brainwave of killing two birds with one jab. One year ago as India went into lockdown the prime mini
