Future Force: How India's military must handle the change to Theatre Command structure

Changing the current organisational structures of the Armed Forces to Theatre Command Structure needs detailed analysis involving management experts. The management of change to integrate the Armed Forces which have a large cultural legacy is a formidable task. Any problem that needs a solution starts with analysing the “Presented Problem”, then the “Problem as Understood” by the research team after due interactions at desired user levels culminating in the “Problem to be Solved”. Then serious work starts on solving the problem and at the Armed Forces level, the team members would include officers from all the armed forces. Interaction with the stakeholders continues throughout the process. Recommendations are shared with all the stakeholders. Metrics are drawn to assess the enhancement of effectiveness with the re-organised structures. Assessment after implementation is a crucial factor especially in a pilot project. Implementation comes after all these steps. From media reports that

Government’s power to change ‘Land Use’ classification mostly skyrockets its value but can also cut price of prime land

For an ostensibly democratic country, the most populous in the world, India practices a great deal of privileged behaviour amongst its political classes. For a country with millions below the poverty line still, politicians from panchayats, municipalities, government cooperatives, local government upwards, enjoy elaborate pay, allowances and perquisites. This is on a scale not seen in most developed and rich countries with a fraction of our population and much higher per capita income. India also has very high indirect taxation on practically all products and services and the direct tax base is very narrow and small because of vast numbers exempted irrespective of their financial status. Not only do elected politicians in the state Assemblies and in the national Parliament accord themselves pay rises and additions to their perquisites without any reference or accountability to the voting public, but they have a bewildering array of other benefits. Politicians elected to Parliament i

Insha Rasool, organic farming and the HomeGreens tale from Kashmir

Image
A scientist from Kashmir left her doctoral studies in South Korea in the middle of it in order to pursue her passion for starting an agricultural business. Insha Rasool, 30, a native of Budgam district in central Kashmir, did not let her transition from academia to farming go to waste and has successfully turned her business into a prosperous one. Insha and her husband while working as scientists in South Korea had the idea to build an organic farm back in Kashmir when they were on school vacation in the Valley. Insha Rasool, a woman in her mid-30s, was inspired to begin organic farming in Kashmir after seeing a strawberry field in South Korea and also after receiving encouragement from her husband. Insha, who was studying molecular signalling at a South Korean university, was interested in finding out more about organic farming. For the past two years, she has put a lot of effort into growing the “farm-to-fork” business –Homegreens. She contacted nearby farms before beginning this p

Touch of ethereal in Meghalaya: Gods of the sacred grove

Image
The lush thick forest on a rainy day is one bad idea. But I kept walking on a brownish stony path. Instead of leopards and snakes, I spotted whitish baby mushrooms fruiting from dark mossy barks. Only little light penetrated through the dense tree line. This was an ancient world where creepers resembled snakes and the red orchids transformed into silent birds preening in the monsoon. I was headed into the supernatural hinterland Mawphalang — the sacred grove. The local belief is that the sacred grove still serves as a portal between worlds. Spirits still inhabit this forest and govern the realms. This is a holy place revered by all Khasi people — Christians and indigenous faith alike. In 2016, the place gained prominence after Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit. And has since attracted thousands of visitors each year. And I managed to locate the man who was Modi’s guide at the stately visit. The elderly Tambor Lyngdoh, is a special kind of Christian. He believes in the Bible but a

India needs an organisational design based on indigenous doctrine to develop its military into a ‘future force’

Image
The prime minister in his address to the combined commanders conference held at Kevadia, Gujarat, on 6 March 2022 “stressed the importance of enhancing indigenisation in the national security system, not just in sourcing equipment and weapons but also in the doctrines, procedures”. Taking note of the rapidly changing technological landscape, the prime minister highlighted the need to develop the Indian military into a “future force”. The subsequent articles in the media harp upon an Air Defence Command, which the air force is not in favour of and the form of Theatre Commands that is taking shape, whereas the prime minister intended a future force with greater jointness. This highlights the realisation that the effectiveness of the armed forces is sub-optimal when all three (army, navy and the air force) are required to act in an integrated manner to produce results greater than the sum of all three. Combat effectiveness could be described as the systematic military application of se
