With dwindling savings and no hopes for a job, many of them are now preparing to go back to their homes. "There is no point," says Kundan, a 30-year-old carpenter who has been coming to the chowk every morning for the past six months. "When the initial phase of lockdown happened, we travelled 1,000 kilometres on foot to reach our villages. Then, two months later, they (the government) open the borders and asked us to come back. COVID-19 lockdown anniversary: Worst behind, Indian economy poised to bounce back but rising cases risk recovery

Image
New Delhi: Its recovery from the depths of the lockdown-induced recession was swifter than expected but a surge in coronavirus cases is threatening to hurt the Indian economy which is expected to grow at 11 percent in 2021-22. Exactly a year back, the government imposed what is touted as the world's most stringent lockdown to contain the spread of the pandemic. The lockdown brought the economy to a halt as factories were shut, trains were stopped and flights were suspended. This sent the economy into its worst-ever contraction of 24.4 percent in the June quarter, followed by a -7.3 percent shrinkage in July-September, pushing the economy into a rare recession. However, the economy's rebound was better than expected, with GDP surpassing its pre-pandemic level in the December quarter, growing 0.4 percent year-on-year. The rebound led to ministers predicting a sharp ''V-shaped'' recovery. But the surge in coronavirus cases, despite the rollout of a nationwid

To add to this, enterprises like 'Tholgiri' are encouraging the state’s youngsters towards promoting their own ethnic items. However, these entrepreneurial endeavours are not without their own set of risks and problems. The COVID-19 pandemic hit one of Bibek’s start-ups, AOTA, which makes custom-designed T-shirts. Assam Assembly Election 2021: Congress not a divided house, will defeat BJP this time, says Pradyut Bordoloi

With less than 24 hours to go for the first phase of voting in 47 Legislative Assembly constituencies of Assam, the excitement leading to the beginning of the political battle is increasing by the minute. Unlike 2016, BJP does not have the benefits of a Narendra Modi this time. There are factors on the ground like the anti-CAA sentiments that, although diluted, can still trigger an anti-incumbency mood. As such the Congress has regrouped strongly in the last few months picking up strategic partners, hiding internal differences and embarking on a massive social media drive. Congress MP from Nowgong Pradyut Bordoloi, who is at the forefront of campaigning along with other party leaders, in a freewheeling chat with Firstpost , explains why the party is better prepared to take on the BJP this time despite the ruling party's campaigning blitzkrieg. Edited excerpts follow: As before, BJP is projecting its development plant as its USP to seek votes. How convinced are you? The developm
