India World Cup provisional squad
India pick seven batters, four bowlers and four all-rounders in the 15-man provisional squad
Both KL Rahul and Ishan Kishan have been included
15-member squad: Rohit Sharma (c), Shubman Gill, Virat Kohli, Shreyas Iyer, Ishan Kishan, Suryakumar Yadav, KL Rahul, Hardik Pandya (vc), Jasprit Bumrah, Ravindra Jadeja, Shardul Thakur, Axar Patel, Kuldeep Yadav, Mohammed Shami, Mohammed Siraj
13:51 (IST)
Rohit Sharma: "Against Pakistan, Ishan and Hardik put their hand up and made themselves count. Hardik's form will be crucial for us. He bowls and bats for us and the all-rounders will be useful for us. He also showed his maturity under pressure. These are good qualities of good batter. In the last year and half, he's come up well with the bat and it will be important for us."
13:48 (IST)
Ajit Agarkar: "We did discuss other players but we have to find the right balance, the batting depth. Kuldeep takes the ball away from the lefties. We have quality bowlers that will find a way against the best in the world. And we've got full faith"
13:46 (IST)
Rohit Sharma: "This was the best way we could create best balance and depth. Given the resources at our disposal, we have the right squad. I think this is the best combiination"
13:45 (IST)
Rohit Sharma: "We lacked batting depth and we identified that. In the Asia Cup also, we lacked it (vs Pakistan). We ended up getting 265, if we had more, 10-15 runs, could make the difference between winning and losing. We do understand that getting the combination right is important. We have to use the resources to the best. You have to see the conditions, who is bowling well. You can't have six bowlers bowling 10 overs. There will be times when spinners will not bowl their entire quota."
13:42 (IST)
Rohit Sharma: "It is good if players are fighting for their spots. If you have quality in your team, it makes it challenging for the captain. But we have to look at the form, the opposition, who can be more beneficial and then decide the best playing XI. If someone misses out, then it happens. It happens every time. You have to make tough choices and do it for the team."
13:40 (IST)
Rohit Sharma: "There will be players who miss out - that will be for every World Cup. You can only get 15 in. The talent that we have, it is tough. You have to have your chin up and be ready for the next opportunity. For us, we needed to find the right balance and this is the best 15 we can get."
13:39 (IST)
Rohit Sharma: "The format itself (the World Cup) allows one to make a comeback. England did it in 2019. You have time to execute your strategies, plans. In T20, you had little time. This is a different format where you play nine times and then semis, final. Even if you don't start well, you can always make a comeback. It does give you a little bit of breathing space"
13:37 (IST)
Ajit Agarkar: "Ishan Kishan played a lovely innings. You'd rather have a headache. There will be a conversation when KL Rahul returns. We'll sit down and discuss. Happy to have two players who will fight for a place than the other way around"
13:35 (IST)
Ajit Agarkar: "There are 17-18 players who are here and in contention. We have a 15 that we've picked and we can't change unless there are injuries. KL Rahul picked up niggle at NCA and has batted regularly and looks good. He is an important player for us and we're happy to have him"
13:33 (IST)
