Delhi's air quality turns 'severe' on Diwali; firecrackers, stubble burning make pollution worse

New Delhi: Delhi's air quality turned "severe" on Saturday with stubble burning accounting for 32 percent of Delhi's PM2.5 pollution and firecracker emissions making the situation even worse. A layer of haze lingered over Delhi-NCR at night as people continued bursting firecrackers despite a ban, and calm winds allowing accumulation of pollutants. The level of PM2.5 – which is about three percent the diameter of a human hair and can lead to premature deaths from heart and lung diseases – was 331 microgram per cubic metre (µg/m3) in Delhi-NCR at 10 pm, above the emergency threshold of 300 µg/m3. Narendra Modi celebrates Diwali with soldiers at Longewala Post; sends stern message to China

Delivering an unambiguous message to India's enemies, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday asserted that it will give a "prachand jawab" (fierce reply) if provoked, as he flew to Longewala Post to celebrate Diwali with soldiers, a tradition he has been following since assuming office in 2014. Addressing soldiers at the forward post, which has become a part of military legend after troops in Longewala post successfully thwarted numerically higher Pakistani forces in the 1971 war, Modi took a swipe at China without naming it, saying the world is troubled by "expansionist forces" and expansionism shows a "distorted mindset" that belongs to the 18th century. India has become a forceful voice against forces of expansionism, he said and also took aim at Pakistan, adding that Indian soldiers have hit "sponsors of terrorism" in their home, a reference to air and surgical strikes against terror camps in the neighbouring country. "No force

Longewala: Keeping with his practice of spending time with soldiers on Diwali, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday addressed troops at Longewala Post in which he asserted that India will give a " prachand jawab " (fierce reply) if it is provoked. In a clear swipe at China, Modi said without naming it that entire world feels troubled by "expansionist" forces and expansionism shows a "distorted mindset" which belongs to 18th Century. "India believes in policy of understanding others and making them understand but if an attempt to test it is made, then the country will give a fierce reply," he asserted. His unambiguous message came amid continuing standoff with China at Ladakh border. No force in the world can prevent our soldiers from protecting our borders, he said, adding that India has shown that it has strength and the political will to give a befitting reply to those challenging it. "The world now knows that India will not comp

World Diabetes day: Everything that you need to know about gestational diabetes when you are pregnant

Gestational diabetes is an illness in which the blood sugar levels rise during pregnancy. Delhi's air quality 'very poor'; firecracker emissions may push pollution to 'severe' level by evening

New Delhi: Delhi's air quality remained “very poor” on Saturday morning and emission from firecrackers and calm winds may push it to the “severe” zone, according to government agencies and weather experts. The Ministry of Earth Sciences'' air quality monitor, SAFAR, said the PM2.5 concentration in Delhi on Diwali is likely to be the “lowest” in the last four years if no firecrackers are burnt. Pollution levels in Delhi during the Diwali period are likely to remain in the higher end of the “very poor” category in the absence of emissions due to fireworks, it said. But two factors – smoke from farm fires and stagnant surface winds – will keep the air quality in the higher end of the “very poor” category to the lower end of the “severe” on Diwali night, it said. The central government's Air Quality Early Warning System for Delhi said, “The air quality in Delhi-NCR is likely to deteriorate further and enter the ''severe'' category by evening.” SAFAR sa

Children's Day: COVID-19 showed us glaring holes in the public health system that risk the health of our children

Image
Over 100 children under five die every hour in India — that is one child’s life snuffed out every minute. India has among the highest rates of infant mortality and malnutrition. It also accounts for a third of the world’s stunted children according to the Global Nutrition Report 2018 . Girls and children from the Adivasi, Dalit, Muslim and other marginalized communities are, particularly at risk. This is not surprising given the state of public health in India. Almost 50 percent of all deaths below five can be prevented by providing skilled health care at birth and quality postnatal care for the mother and baby. Despite undeniable, but gradual progress in addressing child nutrition, undernutrition continues to be associated with 50 percent of all under-five deaths. India’s primary healthcare system is in disarray. There is a shortage of facilities, workers and other essential facilities, particularly in rural areas where the majority of Indians live. We face an  83 percent shortf

Ravi Belagere (1958-2020): Remembering a maverick whose journalism was both sensationalist and subversive

The death of Kannada tabloid journalist Ravi Belagere marks the abrupt end to a colourful career characterised by excitement and controversy. Belagere is best known as the founder-editor of Hi Bangalore , a sensationalist Kannada tabloid which caught the public imagination in the 1990s. There had already been a hugely popular tabloid in Lankesh Patrike run by litterateur P Lankesh but where that was literary and dealt with literary, political and cultural issues, sometimes in a controversial way, Hi Bangalore was unabashedly sensationalist and often dealt with the underworld and its nefarious doings. When Ravi Belagere arrived on the scene in Bengaluru, his name was already familiar to me. He was from Bellary and I had worked there in the early ‘80s. Belagere was a lecturer in a local college — in History, I later learned — and Bellary was then a small town. I recollect a local talent contest among college students, Ravi Belagere standing behind a curtain, and visible from where I w

Have India’s anti-Hindutva champions dumped electoral democracy for street anarchy?

He once used to be a pollster with a keen nose that picked up changing electoral scents, if not always the arithmetic. He is soft-spoken, mild-mannered and seemingly pragmatic. But the statements that Yogendra Yadav made on the Bihar election results day belie all that. Those were the words of a very bitter man, going against the grain of his work as a psephologist and later a politician. “Even if NDA forms the government, they would not be able to claim that they have a mandate to rule,” reports quoted Yadav as saying. Another report quoted him as saying: “Bihar is no longer the epicentre of north Indian politics. State elections are no longer the indicator of the national mood. And elections are not the big happening place in politics.” When the man who earned his name predicting and analysing elections makes such statements, there is something amiss. When these remarks come in the backdrop of violent anti-CAA protests just a few months ago and the Delhi riots in which Yadav was

It is said that in order to protect the residents of Gokul, Lord Krishna lifted the Govardhan Parvat with his little finger after Lord Indra caused massive rains. Legend has it that the people of Braj region would make vast offerings to Lord Indra to seek his blessings. Once Lord Krishna, when he was still a little boy, wondered why one should resort to appeasement, believing that Bhakti or devotion is the only way to connect with divinity. Realising his point, Nanda and the brijwasis decided to end the tradition of appeasing Lord Indra. Angered at their decision, Indra lashed the region with torrential rains and thunderstorms. To end the people's sufferings, Krishna lifted the Govardh

Diwali 2020: How to celebrate festival of lights with eco-friendly alternatives like diyas, natural rangoli

Diwali, the festival of lights, is one of the more significant festivals celebrated in India. Often considered to be the symbolic victory of light over darkness, Diwali or Deepawali sees people declutter their living and work spaces and decorate it with flowers, diyas or earthen lamps and rangolis. This year, Diwali will be celebrated on 14 November. As per the Hindu calendar, the festival of lights fall on Amavasya or new moon on the 15th day of the Kartik month. Another important aspect of Diwali is the bursting of crackers . And even though the festivities are the mainstay of India's Rs 5,000-crore fireworks industry, it leads to surge in air pollution due to the materials used to manufacture them. This has led to several states and Union Territories imposing a complete ban on all forms of firecrackers. The ban comes as experts warn that worsening air quality, due to smoke and pollutants from bursting firecrackers could be detrimental to the health of COVID-19 patients. H

India’s new social security code is progressive, but definition loopholes may deprive 4.2 cr home-based workers of benefits

Rukmini (name changed) is a home-based worker from Fulia, West Bengal, a region known for its handwoven Jamdani sarees. Her weaves carry on a centuries’ old tradition. And in recent times, adapting to the demands of the international market, Rukmini also handcrafts scarves using her age-old loom. In Fulia, there are thousands of home-based weavers like Rukmini. Despite producing exquisite weaves for the national and international market, home-based weavers, in Fulia, barely make minimum wage often earning lesser. A saree, that takes almost a week to weave on the loom and sells at premium prices in retail stores, may mean only a fraction of that price as wages for them. This means that these home-based workers live from day to day, with no savings to fall back on in times of need. This could be a health emergency, a pandemic, or a natural disaster, such as when Cyclone Amphan wreaked havoc in the state earlier this year. During these times, the workers turn to money-lenders, incurring
