India’s diplomatic boycott of Beijing Winter Olympics: Relevance and significance

Many Western and Oriental countries had announced their diplomatic boycott of the Beijing Winter Olympics from 6 December 2021 onwards and India was the last country to do so a day before the opening ceremony. India’s decision was not related to the decision of the United States, Canada, European countries or Indo-Pacific countries, such as Japan, Australia and New Zealand. No single country provided the leadership and coordinated an international boycott of the Beijing Olympics. It is understood, however, that some countries’ decision was inspired or encouraged by the decision of the Biden Administration to send a message to China and sensitise the international community about the flagrant violation of human rights by China in Xinjiang, Hong Kong and elsewhere. The issue was not just the violation of civil rights of people but the alleged genocide of Uyghur minorities by the Chinese government. Some countries took the decision on a diplomatic boycott on the ground of the prevailin

Budget 2022: Time to focus on upskilling can elevate tech talent pool

For the second time in a row, Sitharaman trooped in with a nifty tablet in hand to present the Union Budget. The world’s largest democracy going paperless in Parliament is the perfect representation of how deep the effects of digitiSation have percolated. Budget 2022 threw up a lot of buzzwords that technology lovers would appreciate. We got announcements on crypto and digital currency, drones and agritech, and an extended tax holiday for startups. All of it welcome moves. The bit that interested me the most, was when the FM talked of upskilling and educational initiatives. As an engineer and a CTO, I have frequently spoken about the need for a skill-first economy. Too often, in the developer world, have I seen good talent fall by the wayside when compared to a good ‘resume’. Traditional markers of aptitude, like academic pedigree and employment history, regularly elbow out skills. In the last two years, however, WFH and the globalization of our workforce have brought the importance

Budget 2022: Implications of crypto tax regime on common investor

After months of speculation and waiting, the crypto ecosystem finally has a nod from the Government of India albeit in terms of a tax regime. The early investors are especially rejoicing after years of roller-coaster signals from various authorities in the country. India, now, is unlikely to get a ban on crypto and that is progressive for the nation. The announced tax regime legitimizes the virtual digital asset class (including crypto and NFTs) and paves the way for a formal umbrella of regulations going forward. While there is enough reason to celebrate as an ecosystem, we take the lens of a common investor to understand the implications. Taxation appears high The new tax regime does appear to be a strong whip on crypto trading. With crypto being accorded the highest tax slab for any asset class at 30 percent and the implementation of a 1 percent TDS on bigger trades, investors may feel the pinch if they react to certain market movements with additional trades. However, we do beli

Budget 2022: Proposals on increased infra capex, MSMEs, to largely benefit banking sector

The multiple Budget announcements pertaining to increase in capital expenditure on infrastructure as also incentives for the MSME sector, besides others, are likely to prove largely beneficial for the banking sector going forward. The significant increase in capital expenditure budget for FY2023 by 35.4 percent to Rs 7.5 trillion is expected to be spent across various infra sectors. This is expected to trigger a multiplier effect and improve the private sector investment appetite which currently is low. The banking sector will benefit, from increased infra spending as it has been witnessing single digit credit growth for past many years. The public sector banks (PSBs) typically constitute for almost two-third of the banking sector credit. However, headwinds during last few years had constrained their ability to supply credit. The situation turned around upon capital infusion of Rs. 3.36 trillion during last six years, leading to significant cleaning up of PSBs balance sheets and meas

Here’s a detailed look at the figures released by the Centre on this trend. Explaining encounter killings Before we delve into what the Centre had to say on this practice, let’s understand what exactly an encounter killing is. 2022 Assembly elections: Why it’s advantage BJP in Uttar Pradesh despite anti-incumbency, farm protests

Image
As Uttar Pradesh goes into the Assembly elections, with the first phase of polling getting over on 10 February, electoral speculations are on full swing. For a state like Uttar Pradesh there are several factors at play that would decide the poll outcome. And after going through each of these factors, it seems the BJP has an advantage over others despite anti-incumbency and farmers’ protests. Caste fault lines A lot has been said in recent times about the Brahmin-Rajput rivalry and Brahmins’ anger with the BJP. Shashikant Pandey, HoD, Political Science at the Babasaheb Bhimrao Ambedkar University (BBAU), Lucknow, however, feels that this perceived anger has been blown out of proportion. Gilles Verniers, associate professor, Political Science, Ashoka University, also shares the same view. While Pandey calls the perceived rivalry as a “rivalry within family” Verniers thinks it's “an inflated rivalry”. Be it the Ram Janmabhoomi Trust, the Shri Kashi Vishwanath Nyas Parishad, the UP

Manipur Assembly Elections 2022: Understanding EC’s decision to defer polling dates to 28 February and 5 March

The Election Commission announced on Thursday that the dates for the two-phase Assembly polls in Manipur have been rescheduled and will now be held on 28 February and 5 March. Earlier, the polls were to be held on 27 February and 3 March. Here’s why the poll body decided to change the dates and also previous instances when polling dates have been changed. Why the change? Officials from the Election Commission explained that the change in dates came after they visited Manipur on 7 and 8 February to review election preparedness. It was then that the suggestion was presented to them by the stakeholders. Sources, according to news agency PTI , said that one of the reasons for rescheduling the polls was a demand made by some Christian organisations not to hold elections on a Sunday. The previous date of 27 February — the announced date for phase one of the polls — is a Sunday when Christians go to church to offer prayers. Earlier, the All Manipur Christian Organisation had raised ob
