Opinion | Why ‘Dismantling Global Hindutva’ is a xenophobic event with lies at its core

The timing could not have been more ironic. The intent could not have been more brazenly sinister. The Taliban have again taken over Afghanistan, merely gloss-coating its old, barbaric ways with promises and press conferences. Just as the spotlight falls on the stubbornly violent and unchanging aspects of radical Islam, its principal votaries and known Hinduphobes have come out to deflect attention. They must now target the world's most ancient faith, which has co-existed with and sheltered dozens of other ones. But what trumps it all is that the genocide-whitewashing, Hinduphobic three-day rant is apparently being sponsored by departments of top US universities like Columbia, Princeton, Berkeley, Harvard and U-Penn. The aggressive, genocidal imagery begins right from the brochure of the online event. It shows Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) figures being uprooted, roots and all, with the claw end of a hammer. The RSS is arguably the world’s largest non-governmental organisat

Raksha Bandhan 2021: From Maharashtra to Bihar, how various states celebrate this festival

The festival of Raksha Bandhan marks the special bond between siblings. A sister ties a rakhi around her brother’s wrist while he promises to protect her forever. However, in a diverse country like India, this is not the only way the festival is celebrated. In many regions, the occasion is marked differently. In Maharashtra and other coastal areas, the day is marked as Narali Poornima. The sea is worshipped on this day, with fishermen throwing coconuts into the sea as offerings. In Bihar and Madhya Pradesh, the start of the agricultural season is declared and people celebrate Kajari Purnima. In Telegu-speaking regions, Rakhi is marked as Rakhi Purnima. Many families have a tradition where daughters tie a rakhi to their father. In some parts of South India, the occasion of Rakhi Purnima is marked as Avani Avittam. A festival for the male members of the family, it is observed by taking a dip in the water on a full moon night in the Hindu month of Shravan. The men seek atonement for

Zydus Cadila vaccine gets EUA for adolescents: A look at scientific, ethical concerns in inoculating minors for COVID-19

With indigenously developed Zydus Cadila's COVID-19 vaccine receiving emergency use authorisation (EUA), another landmark in India's vaccination drive has been achieved: that of providing a vaccination option for the adolescent population (12-18) in the country of 1.3 billion people. Covishield, Covaxin and Sputnik V, which are currently available in Indian markets, are being administered only to those above 18 years of age. On the other hand, ZyCoV-D, which is a three-dose vaccine, has been okayed for all those aged 12 and above. However, the fact that the vaccine candidate is approved for use in children does not automatically mean that it will be available right away. A report in  Hindustan Times   said the jabs can be rolled out for those under the age of 18 only after the inoculation drive is officially expanded to cover children; at present, India covers only its adult population under its vaccination drive. Furthermore, in previous communications, the company had indi

Johnson & Johnson files application to test its COVID vaccine on adolescents; all you need to know

Johnson & Johnson Friday said it has submitted an application to the Indian drug regulator to conduct a study of its COVID-19 vaccine in adolescents aged 12-17 years.
