Haridwar: The Akhil Bharatiya Akhara Parishad, the organisation of Hindu saints and ascetics, has called a meeting of all the Akharas in Haridwar on 10 October to expel BJP leader and former Union Minister Swami Chinmayanand from the community. According to sources, he will remain ousted from the saint community unless acquitted. File image of Swami Chinmayanand. However, he was charged with an offence not amounting to rape, stalking and criminal intimidation. He was remanded to 14-days judicial custody by a local Court at Shahjahanpur. As per police, Chinmayanand has accepted "all evidence" that have come up against him. The matter came to the fore when the girl went missing on 24 August after putting up a Facebook post alleging that a person from ' sant samaj ' threatened to kill her and her k

Almost twelve hours ahead of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's address to the Indian diaspora in Houston's NRG Football Stadium, where Beyonce and Taylor Swift  have performed and Super Bowls have been held in the past, is abuzz with activity, several publications reported. The event at the NRG Football Stadium, one of the largest in the US, has been organised by the Texas India Forum (TIF), a non-profit organisation. For Ladakh's Pashmina goat-rearing Changpa nomads, change comes to a centuries-old way of life

No phone. No internet. No GPS. Just gusts of howling wind, giving them company from sunrise to sunset, followed by clusters of dazzling stars peeping down from the night sky into their yak-skin tents. Whatever the season, there are always openings in these tents to let fresh air in. Living in the remote, Trans-Himalayan Changthan region of Ladakh, at roughly 16,000-plus feet above sea level where, for centuries, they have been shepherding their world-class Pashmina wool-bearing goats, the Changpa nomads may not be among the most informed people on the Earth. But they surely know which way the wind blows, and can spot a good thing coming. Like for instance, the announcement of new Union Territory status for Ladakh. The information reached them after a few days’ delay, as it always does at these heights, but it hardly matters. Though largely happy at the development, they did not exactly erupt in joy, the way the rest of Ladakh (barring Kargil) did. This is because the Changpas’ respons

World Rhino Day 2019: Myth of magical horns, weaponisation of DNA and the uphill battle against poaching

Image
Announced by the World Wildlife Fund-South Africa in 2010 to celebrate World Rhino Day on 22 September every year, the event took off on a global scale both on online and offline platforms when Lisa Jane Campbell of Chishakwe Ranch in Zimbabwe and founder of Annamitici joined hands with creative director Rhishja Cota in 2011 to create a massive awareness to protect all five species of rhinos — black, white, greater one-horned, Sumatran and Javan — from extinction. "World Rhino Day was actually started by World Wildlife Fund (WWF)-South Africa. However, we promoted the day to include all five species of rhino, which is very important because many people still do not know that three of the five rhino species are Asian rhinos," said Cota in an email from Tucson, Arizona, "It is always a wonderful feeling to see all five rhino species getting recognised and celebrated around the globe. Rhinos are a beloved and iconic species, so people were — and still are — excited when ab

Kolkata: Union minister Babul Supriyo on Saturday assured the mother of a student, who allegedly pulled the hair of the BJP leader at the Jadavpur University during his heckling on Thursday, that he will not harm the career of her son. The student Debanjan Ballav's ailing mother Rupali had urged Supriyo "with folded hands" to pardon her son as handing him over to the police would ruin his career. "Dear auntie, don't worry. I will not take any action that will harm the career of your son," the minister said in a tweet on Saturday, and attached to it a newspaper clipping about the request of the woman who lives in Barddhaman town. "I wish he learns from his mistake. Neither had I lodged any FIR against anybody, nor allowed anyone to do the same. Get well soon," Supriyo said in the micro-blogging site. The newspaper clipping attached to the tweet carried a photograph of teary-eyed Rupali Ballav with her hands folded. চিন্তা করবেন না মাসিমা - আমি

'Only rich will benefit': Kapil Sibal attacks government over corporate tax cut, says poor left to fend for themselves

New Delhi: Senior Congress leader Kapil Sibal on Saturday attacked the government over its move to cut corporate tax, alleging that the rich will benefit while the poor left to fend for themselves. The government on Friday slashed corporate tax rates for companies by almost 10 percentage points to 25.17 per cent and offered a lower rate to 17.01 per cent for new manufacturing firms to boost economic growth rate from a six-year low by incentivising investments to help create jobs. "Howdy Modi. Corporate Diwali. India foregoes 1.45 lakh cr. revenue. Need Diwali for needy folk!" Sibal said in a tweet. Howdy Modi Corporate Diwali India foregoes 1.45 lakh cr. revenue Need Diwali for needy folk ! Extra money in corporate hands will not boost demand . West Bengal governor Jagdeep Dhankhar, accompanied by a sizeable police force, had to rush to the Jadavpur University on Thursday, when students heckled Union minister Babul Supriyo, showing him black flags and refusing to let him leave the campus. Supriyo, who was on campus to address a seminar organised by the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), was stopped from entering the gate. The protests were being staged by students belonging to Students’ Federation of India (SFI), Left-leaning Arts Faculty Students’ Union (AFSU) and Faculty of Engineering and Technology Students’ Union (FETSU), All India Students' Association (AISA) and a few members of the Trinamool Chhatra Parishad (TMCP), who thumped the bonnet of Dhankhar’s vehicle and relented only after teachers persuaded them to lift their blockade.
