Amit Shah plays Ali more than Tyson against China: ducking, guarded, with the occasional sting

In great conflicts, the side speaking less and in a low voice is usually in better control. The side that resorts to bluster, makes grand shows of strength and complains the loudest is normally the shaky or insecure one. In the India-China standoff, China has repeatedly cavilled about Indian incursions into the territory it claims, bad-mouthed and issued threats, and childishly posted show-off videos of military might. India has been more restrained in its statements but obstinately firm and aggressive in standing its ground. One expected signature fireworks and a departure from India’s stoic restraint from Union home minister Amit Shah when he spoke to Network18 group editor Rahul Joshi in an interview telecast on Saturday. But Shah was firmly restrained, dropping only pale but significant hints about India’s moves. It could only mean one thing: India’s topmost security leadership is working to a plan with silent resolve, and will not let any brash statement ruin that. It also

'Thought it was an alien': Iron Man-shaped balloon triggers panic in UP's Greater Noida

Noida:  Anxiety gripped locals in Uttar Pradesh's Greater Noida on Saturday as they noticed a strange flying object in the sky that later turned out to be an Ironman shaped balloon filled with air, according to police. The object was spotted in the sky in the Dankaur area in the morning and later landed in a canal near Bhatta Parsaul village, where a crowd had gathered to see what some of them thought was an alien, officials said. It was a balloon filled with air that had gone up in the sky and later came down and got stuck in the bushes along the canal. A part of the balloon was touching the flowing water in the canal which had led the balloon to shake a little. Unbeknown to the spectators, this made for an anxious watch, Dankaur SHO Anil Kumar Pandey told PTI . He said a major reason behind the anxiety among people was the unusual shape of the balloon. It was shaped like the Ironman (fictional superhero character) given its colour and design. This was an unusual sight so som

The reopening of schools has put parents in a spot as they do not want to expose their children to the risk of catching the infection but are left with no choice as the option of studying online will no longer be available. 'Rising trend of powerful men seeking gag orders': Read NWMI's statement on muzzling of media in cases of sexual assault, harassment

The Network of Women in Media, India (NWMI) together with many eminent personalities is deeply concerned about the rising trend of powerful men seeking gag orders on the media in sexual assault and harassment cases. We stand in solidarity with survivors of sexual harassment and assault. While prioritising the privacy and dignity of survivors above all else, we believe that responsible reporting of broad facts in rape trials is in the interests of justice. The latest instance of the media being gagged is in the alleged sexual assault case of a woman actor for which hearings are currently underway in an Ernakulam trial court. In this case, the woman actor who works across southern India’s film industries was allegedly abducted and  raped  in a moving vehicle in Kerala in February 2017. Investigations by the  Kerala Police  revealed that the prime conspirator in the crime was a reigning superstar of Malayalam cinema. The trial  commenced  in-camera in January 2020. In March, the accuse

Tanishq ad backlash strips India's veneer of pluralism, propped up by television, film programming of decades past

Image
Much has been written about how the controversy over the Tanishq advertisement is emblematic of who we’ve become as a nation: insular, intolerant, indecent, incapable of seeing a world without our bigotry-tinted binary lenses. How the India of the past was so much more accepting and pluralistic than the India we’ve become. Or was it? For generations we’ve had nicknames, phrases, statements that have been bandied about — “Marry anyone, except a Muslim”, “Give her water in the plastic tumbler, she’s not Brahmin” — until they’re normalised to the point where most people don’t think of them as offensive, even as they pay lip service to “unity, equality, secularity”. So, what exactly has the Tanishq controversy unveiled that wasn’t already in practice in India? The Tanishq advertisement has been released in the India of 2020 — a very different India from that of the 1970s and ‘80s. The India of the ‘70s was reeling from a war, and then recovering from an Emergency. The India of the ‘80

New Delhi: The violent clashes on the India-China border in June had a very deep public and political impact and has left the relationship “profoundly disturbed”, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar said on Friday. Tensions had escalated manifold between India and China after the Galwan Valley clashes in eastern Ladakh on 15 June in which 20 Indian Army personnel were killed. The Chinese People's Liberation Army also suffered an unspecified number of casualties. Jaishankar, speaking at a virtual event hosted by the Asia Society, said that India has built the relationship with China over the course of last 30 years “and a basis for building that relationship has been peace and tranquillity along the Line of Actual Control.” He said there are multiple agreements, starting from 1993, which created the framework for that peace and tranquillity, which limited the military forces that came to the border areas, how to manage the border, how border troops behave when they approach e
