Judicial appointments: Judiciary's independence is paramount but need to check ‘imperium in imperio’

In August 2009, the Supreme Court collegium recommended the elevation of Justice P D Dinakaran, who was serving as the Chief Justice of the Karnataka High Court. As reported by The Hindu , soon after the news of his proposed elevation was leaked, Chennai-based Forum for Judicial Accountability sent representations to the former Chief Justice of India, KG Balakrishnan, and other judges of the collegium that Justice Dinakaran had allegedly indulged in land grabbing in Tamil Nadu’s Tiruvallur district. There were serious charges against him related to disproportionate assets, passing questionable judicial orders, and various other corruption allegations. An impeachment proceeding was initiated against Justice Dinakaran but he resigned before it could lead to his removal. However, the statutory committee that probed the charges levelled against him found as many as 12 charges of corruption to be prima facie tenable. In a highly implausible scenario stories of his misconduct and misdeme

Kashmir: Government to boost tourism by installing 'Srinagar Eye' in Dal Lake

Like the ‘London Eye’, Kashmir could soon get its own ‘Srinagar Eye’. The government is planning to install a giant Ferris wheel in the middle of Srinagar’s Dal Lake on a small island, News18 has been told exclusively by sources. The move, if it goes through, could become a huge draw for tourists and also send a significant message in Kashmir, with the Ferris wheel becoming a new symbol of ‘normalcy’, a senior central government official told News18 . This comes close on the heels of Srinagar last month getting its first multiplex where movies are now being screened. Eye-opener The location being short-listed for the giant Ferris wheel is Dole Demb, a land mass inside the Dal Lake which is planned to be developed as an exclusive area for recreational activities. This island is about 2.5 km long. Dole Demb will be developed to promote ‘high-end tourism’ and will see large-scale development, but in an environmentally conducive manner. News18 has learnt that the J&K Lake Conserv

Why LAC with China can’t be allowed to be theatre of turf war between army and ITBP

A press report recently stated that the government is contemplating on whether the ITBP should be given a larger role along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) with China, especially when it comes to patrolling. Currently, most patrols are joint and largely led by the army. The patrolling programme for the region is also made by the army and post approval, shared with all concerned. The final intent is to deploy the army in the second tier with the ITBP in the forward tier. This idea was first rooted two years ago, died a natural death, arose again a month ago, then quietened down under national pressure and has raised its ugly head again. The army, on the other hand, has been fighting tooth and nail, for the ITBP to be placed under it for operational control for better coordination. This is based on the concept of ‘one border, one force responsibility.’ Every committee from the Subramanyam committee post Kargil to the Shekatkar committee has endorsed this stand and insisted that undemar

Resistance to fire will burn the firmament: Time to fight status quoism in geostrategic, national security fields

“Bharatavarsha” is as old as Indic civilisation and it did not have to wait for either the arrival of the hordes of invaders that crossed either the Indus or the Irrawaddy on either ends of the subcontinent, or for the matter the seven seas to become India. To that end, the “idea of India” had already established itself in India when seers of yore went into the “depths of their silence” or figuratively the  Brihadaranyaka  (great forest) in order to contemplate reality. The Vedic corpus or cogitation that came together collectively understood “existence” and saluted “fire” ( Agni ) for the first time as the primordial source of life and also felt that the implicit truth is “existence”, “consciousness” and “blissful” or  sat-chit-ananda . That is precisely why one has  phat  (the fire in the commencement of the time) in every ritual although it is now attributed to a mystical syllable that “annihilates” everything that is bestowed onto  Agni . After all fire is the essence which preser

Watch: Arunachal doctor surprises Madras regiment jawan by speaking fluent Tamil

India is undeniably a diverse country where people from all walks of life live together in solidarity with each other. There are over 100 different regional languages spoken across the country. While people from neighbouring states are likely to understand each other’s languages, those from distant states are likely to face language barriers. However, this assumption was recently put to rest after an Arunachal Pradesh doctor surprised an Army jawan of the Madras Regiment by speaking fluently in Tamil. A video of the same was shared by Arunachal Pradesh chief minister Pema Khandu on his official Twitter handle that shows a conversation between the doctor and the army jawan. Dr Lham Dorjee studied medicine in Tamil Nadu. He surprised a jawan of Madras Regiment by speaking in fluent Tamil with him. They met at Omthang, near Tibet border in Tawang.
