Riddle me This: How an Indian PhD student solved a 2,500-year-old Sanskrit problem

Image
A grammatical error that had academics puzzled since the fifth Century BC has finally been cracked! Indian Rishi Atul Rajpopat, 27, a PhD scholar at the faculty of Asian and Middle Eastern Studies at St. John’s College, Cambridge , has decoded a rule taught by Pāṇini, a master of the Sanskrit language who lived around 2,500 years ago, as per BBC .   What was the grammatical conundrum? The Aṣṭādhyāyī of Pāṇini, according to academics, was a system that worked like an algorithm to transform base and suffix of a word into grammatically correct words and sentences through a step-by-step process. However, he frequently applies two or more of his rules at once, leading to disagreements. Pāṇini introduced a “meta-rule” (termed by Rajpopat ‘1.4.2 vipratiṣedhe paraṁ kāryam’), to help resolve rule conflicts in the linguistic algorithm. However, the scholars have misinterpreted the rule and translated as “In the case of a conflict between two rules of equal strength, the rule that appears

WATCH as Indian Foreign Minister S Jaishankar destroys Pakistan scribe!

New Delhi: External Affairs Minister Dr S Jaishankar gave a befitting reply to a journalist from Pakistan who during a press meet at UN Security Council asked him, “How long will South Asia see terrorism disseminating from New Delhi, Kabul, Pakistan? How long they are going to be at war?” Responding to the journalist from GEO TV Pakistan, Jaishankar said: “You are asking the wrong minister when you say how long will we do this because it is minister from Pakistan who will tell you how long Pakistan intends to practice terrorism.” He went on to says, “At the end of the day, the world is not stupid. The world is not forgetful and the world does increasingly call out countries, organisations, people who indulge in terrorism and by taking the debate elsewhere, you are not going to hide it. You are not going to confuse anybody anymore.” He further told the Pakistan journalist, “My advice is to please clean up your act. Please try to be a good neighbour. Please try and contribute to wha

In pics: Strange light appears in West Bengal sky, baffles residents

Is it a UFO? A spaceship? A meteor? Nobody knows yet. A mysterious light emanated from the sky in West Bengal and was visible for around five minutes in several parts including Kolkata, Bishnupur, Kirnahar, Ghatal and Murshidabad. The light was spotted at around 5:47 pm on Thursday and appeared as a spotlight. Its surfacing gave rise to a range of speculations with some comparing the sighting with a meteor, a satellite and even an alien spaceship. Initially, experts and the West Bengal administration were clueless about the strange light. The light, however, gradually diminished from the night sky and as per witnesses, it was visible in the eastern parts of the sky. Some, on the other hand, claimed that the light was seen in the northern parts of the sky. According to a report by Times of India , Rakesh Mazumdar from the Centre of Excellence in Space Sciences Kolkata’s Indian Institute of Science and Research said that considering the intensity of the light, it was unlikely to be

Explained: The significance of the Agni-V missile trial amid China clashes

Image
On Thursday, India successfully carried out the night trials of the nuclear-capable Agni-V missile from the Abdul Kalam Island off the coast of Odisha. Defence sources quoted by news agency ANI said that the test was carried out to validate new technologies and equipment on the missile that are now lighter than before. Defence ministry sources were quoted as telling NDTV that this was the ninth flight of the Agni-V — a missile first tested back in 2012. Incidentally, the trial comes at a time when India and China ties are at its lowest once again following the clash in the Tawang sector of Arunachal. Troops of India and China clashed there on 9 December, resulting in minor injuries to soldiers on both sides. Officials commenting on the timing of the test said that the trial of the Agni-V missile was routine and it had been planned earlier, with India issuing a notice declaring the Bay of Bengal as a no-fly zone. We take a closer look at the Agni-V, India’s first inter-continental

Air India pilots red flags long work hours, pay cuts, unfair salary

The Air India pilots’ union, Indian Pilots Guild & Pilots’ Association, has written to the airline red flagging shortage of pilots and the challenges they are facing including long work hours, pay cuts and deteriorating work-life balance, sources told CNBC-TV18 on Thursday. IPG-ICPA told the airline, now taken over by the Tata group, that pilots have flown over 90 hours per month on all fleets which exceed the 70-hours per month limit. This raises the question of the safety of passengers due to pilot exhaustion which has happened earlier in commercial flight history. The pilots have also alleged that Air India management has been denying and cancelling leaves to pilots and that they are being punished with pay cuts on the months that they fall sick, avail leave or undergo training. They noted that they can no longer sacrifice quality of life, work-life balance, and long-term health. The Air India pilots union pointed out that they were not satisfied about not being paid the pre

G20 under India's presidency can make concrete progress in debt relief, crypto, climate finance: Gita Gopinath

Washington: G-20, under India’s presidency, can make concrete progress on three critical areas: debt relief, regulations of crypto currency and climate finance, International Monetary Fund’s (IMF) First Deputy Managing Director Gita Gopinath said. National Energy Conservation day 2022: History, significance and all you need to know

In a bid to raise awareness on the importance of energy conservation for the present and the coming generations, every year on 14 December India celebrates National Energy Conservation Day. Intending to make sure that the coming generation lives in a brighter tomorrow, it is crucial to make sure that certain steps need to be taken. In layman’s language, energy conservation emphasises the judicious usage of energy that not only minimises wastage but also ensures that sources for the future are saved. It is not just a decision but also a practice, which results in less energy usage. And it begins with simple steps like switching off the light when you leave the room, unplugging the appliances when they’re not in use, and so on. All these things are necessary as most of the energy sources that we use in daily life are ‘non-renewable’ and they cannot be reused and renewed. History The Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE) under the Union ministry of power annually celebrates the special day

Instead of states, Centre should decide on the ban on online gaming

The Online gaming and gambling industry is again in the focus with some States going all out in their efforts at imposing a ban on “games of chance”; and “online gambling”. The problem is that some States like Tamil Nadu that promulgated an Ordinance and then passed a Bill in the Legislative Assembly do not seem to have much of a clue either about how to define “games of chance” or about how they will enforce the proposed ban. For now in Tamil Nadu, there is a stalemate with the Governor RN Ravi not having granted assent to the Bill. The Ordinance itself (ironically signed by the same Governor) lapsed. When the E-Gaming Federation went to the Madras High Court against the Ordinance, the TN Government embarrassingly, told the Court they had not enforced the Ordinance, (which they pushed through as they felt the matter could not even wait until the next Assembly session a month away) as yet. The Ordinance which the Tamil Nadu Government passed is believed to be the basis of the Bill no
