Chhattisgarh Naxal attack: Amit Shah speaks to Bhupesh Baghel, directs CRPF chief to visit state

New Delhi: Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Sunday spoke to Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel and took stock of the situation following the killing of five security personnel in an encounter with Naxals in the state, officials said. Shah also directed Director General of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) Kuldiep Singh to visit Chhattisgarh to asses the situation. The home minister spoke to the Chhattisgarh chief minister and took stock of the situation arising after the encounter, a home ministry official said. The chief minister is believed to have briefed the home minister about the steps taken by the state government after the incident, another official said. India records 93,249 new COVID-19 cases, in highest single-day rise since 19 September

New Delhi: India on Sunday recorded 93,249 new coronavirus infections, the highest single-day rise so far this year, which took the total COVID-19 cases to 1,24,85,509, according to Union health ministry data. This is the biggest daily rise in cases since 19 September, when 93,337 fresh infections were recorded. The death toll climbed to 1,64,623 on Sunday with 513 new fatalities, the ministry data updated at 8 am showed. Registering a steady increase for the 25th day in row, the active cases surged to 6,91,597, accounting for 5.54 percent of the total infections. The recovery rate further dropped to 93.14 percent, the data stated. The active caseload was at its lowest at 1,35,926 on 12 February, comprising 1.25 percent of the total infections. The number of people who have recuperated from the disease increased to 1,16,29,289, while the case fatality rate stands at 1.32 percent, according to the data. Kanpur: After a controversy arose over reports of a woman purportedly getting two shots of an anti-COVID vaccine in one go at a primary health centre in Akbarpur area of Kanpur Dehat district, health officials claimed that only one dose was administered. The condition of a woman, who was allegedly administered two shots of the vaccine is stable, officials said in Kanpur. A senior official, meanwhile, ruled out the possibility of two doses being given in one go. "It is technically not possible to administer two shots to anyone back to back," Additional Chief Secretary (Health) Amit Mohan Prasad told news agency  PTI in Lucknow after reports emerged that the auxiliary nursing midwife (ANM), who gave the shots, was on a phone call leading to the goof-up. Bihar issues fresh COVID-19 guidelines; reopening of schools, colleges deferred till 11 April

Patna: The Nitish Kumar government in Bihar on Saturday came out with a number of fresh restrictions to contain the spread of COVID-19, which has seen a country-wide surge in the recent past. Guidelines were issued by the state's home department after a high-level meeting, chaired by Kumar, reviewed the situation in Bihar. Reopening of schools and colleges, which were scheduled on 5 April, shall now be deferred till 11 April and all institutions have been directed to reschedule tests and examinations accordingly, the department said in a release. Deployment of additional police force at bus terminuses, railway stations, vegetable markets and eating joints to ensure social distancing and prevent overcrowding has also been ordered. The communication stated that entry of stray visitors inside government offices shall remain restricted, while public transport vehicles will be allowed to ply, with the number of passengers not exceeding 50 percent of total capacity, till 15 April.

ARPIT 2020 exams postponed due to West Bengal elections; check nta.ac.in for details

ARPIT 2020 | The Annual Refresher Programme In Teaching (ARPIT) 2020 examination has been postponed by the National Testing Agency (NTA). The exam was to take place on 10 April, but has been deferred due to the West Bengal Assembly elections. ARPIT is a three-hour Computer Based Test (CBT) of 100 marks with no negative marking. The exam will be held in two shifts. The exam in the morning shift will take place from 9 am to 12 pm while it will be conducted from 3 pm to 6 pm in the afternoon shift. If a candidate is attempting the exam for multiple courses , he/she will have to ensure that the test for each course is in different slot timing. Launched on 13 November, 2018, ARPIT is an initiative by the Ministry of Education for higher education faculty. Chandigarh: Farmers on Saturday held a protest against Haryana chief minister Manohar Lal Khattar in Rohtak, resulting in a lathicharge by police and prompting the authorities to shift the site for the landing of his chopper. According to an official, a police personnel was injured in the incident. The protesters said an elderly farmer was also injured in the melee. Farmers had gathered outside a private university where the chief minister's chopper was to land. Khattar was to attend a condolence meet in memory of Rohtak MP Arvind Sharma's father. Heavy police security arrangements were made outside the university with barricades put up to stop protesters, said officials. Poll-bound states see COVID-19 surge as daily count near 90k; Maharashtra reports 49,447 cases

India on Saturday recorded 89,129 new COVID-19 cases in a day, the highest daily rise in around six-and-half-months, taking the nationwide tally of infections to over 1.23 crore, according to the Union Health Ministry data on Saturday. The death toll increased to 1,64,110 with 714 more fatalities in a day, also the highest since 21 October. The jump in cases reported on Saturday was the highest since 20 September last year when 92,605 new infections were recorded in a span of 24 hours. Corresponding to the rapid surge in cases, the number of active cases too have registered a steady increase for the 24th day in a row with the tally reaching 6,58,909, which is 5.32 percent of the total infections. The recovery rate has further dropped to 93.36 percent, the data stated. Chhattisgarh: Five jawans killed in encounter with Naxals in Tarrem along Sukmaand-Bijapur border

Raipur: Five security personnel were killed and a few others injured on Saturday in an encounter with Naxals at a forest in Chhattisgarh's Bijapur district, a top police officer said. According to the police, some Maoists are also suspected to have been killed during the exchange of fire. "The gunbattle broke out in Tarrem area (along ) when a joint team of security forces was out on an anti-Naxal operation," Chhattisgarh Director General of Police DM Awasthi said. The personnel belonging to the CRPF's elite Commando Battalion for Resolute Action unit (CoBRA), the District Reserve Guard (DRG) and the Special Task Force (STF) were involved in the operation, he said. A high-level probe panel appointed by the Supreme Court to take erring cops to task for causing "tremendous harassment" and "immeasurable anguish" to ISRO scientist Dr Nambi Narayanan in the 1994 espionage case has submitted its report to the apex court, sources said. The SC had on 14 September, 2018 appointed the three-member panel headed by its former judge DK Jain while directing the Kerala government to cough up Rs 50 lakh compensation for compelling Narayanan to undergo "immense humiliation". The scientist was arrested when Congress was heading the government in Kerala. The panel, after investigation, submitted its report in a sealed cover to the apex court recently. Saradha chit fund case: ED attaches assets of TMC leaders Kunal Ghosh, Satabdi Roy under PMLA

New Delhi: The Enforcement Directorate (ED) on Saturday said it has attached assets worth Rs 3 crore of TMC spokesperson Kunal Ghosh, its MP Satabdi Roy and Debjani Mukherjee in the Saradha chit fund money laundering case. It said a provisional order for attachment of the movable and immovable properties has been issued under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA). The central probe agency said in a statement that the assets belong to "Kunal Ghosh, ex-Rajya Sabha MP from Trinamool Congress (CEO of Media Group Saradha), Satabdi Roy, Lok Sabha MP from TMC (brand ambassador in Saradha), and Debjani Mukherjee who is a director in Saradha Group of companies in Saradha chit fund case." Delhi University's Ram Lal Anand College has terminated the service of assistant professor GN Saibaba, who is currently serving a life term in Nagpur Central Prison for alleged Maoist links. According to a memorandum received by Saibaba's wife Vasantha on Thursday, his services have been terminated with immediate effect from the afternoon of 31 March. "The services of GN Saibaba, assistant professor, Ram Lal Anand College are terminated with immediate effect from the afternoon of March 31, 2021. Three months' salary has been paid in his savings bank account," said the memorandum undersigned by college principal Rakesh Kumar Gupta. Maharashtra reports 47,827 new COVID-19 cases, in highest single-day rise so far

Mumbai: Maharashtra on Friday recorded 47,827 new COVID-19 cases, its highest daily rise since the coronavirus pandemic began last year. It took the state's caseload to 29,04,076, a Health Department statement said. As many as 202 coronavirus-related deaths were reported in the state on Friday, taking the toll to 55,379, it said. As many as 24,126 patients were discharged during the day, pushing the tally of recoveries to 24,57,494. There are 3,89,832 active cases in the state. The recovery rate is 84.62 percent and case fatality rate is 1.91 percent. On Friday, 1,83,378 tests were carried out, taking the tally to 2,01,58,719. Mumbai also recorded its highest one-day rise of 8,844 new cases (8,832 as per the civic body's data). The larger Mumbai division including Mumbai city and its satellite towns saw 15,321 new cases. COVID-19 vaccination: Over 7.06 crore people inoculated so far, says Centre

New Delhi: The cumulative number of coronavirus vaccine doses administered in the country crossed seven crore with 12,76,191 doses given till 8 pm on Friday, the health ministry said as India registered this year's highest single day rise of 81,466 infections. So far, 1,23,03,131 people have tested positive for coronavirus in the country, according to a provisional report till 7 pm on Friday. The country has administered a total of 7,06,18,026 vaccine doses till 8 pm, the ministry said, adding that the number included 6,13,56,345 people who received its first dose. The second dose of the vaccine has been administered to 92,61,681 people. The ministry said the numbers included 89,03,809 healthcare workers (HCWs) and 95,15,410 frontline workers, who have taken the first dose. As many as 52,86,132 HCWs and 39,75,549 FLWs have taken the second dose, the ministry said, adding that 4,29,37,126 beneficiaries above 45 years of age been administered the first dose. States, UTs facing 'grave' COVID-19 situation haven't adequately enforced containment rules, says Centre

New Delhi:  Eleven states and union territories, marked as "states of grave concern" because of their rising daily COVID-19 cases , have not shown a proportionate increase in enforcement of containment activities, the Centre said on Friday. Chairing a high-level review meeting with chief secretaries, Directors General of Police and health secretaries of all states and UTs, Cabinet Secretary Rajiv Gauba asked these states to take strict action to contain the contagion. According to the health ministry, the 11 states of grave concern are Maharashtra, Punjab, Karnataka, Kerala, Chhattisgarh, Chandigarh, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Delhi and Haryana. They have contributed 90 percent of COVID cases, 90.5 percent of deaths in 14 days till 31 March, and have crossed or close to crossing their early reported peaks last year, it said. Lockdown can't be ruled out, says Uddhav Thackeray as COVID-19 surge continues; Maharashtra records 47,827 new cases

Cautioning against a serious shortage of healthcare infrastructure, including staff like doctors and nurses, to tackle the surge in COVID-19 cases, Maharashtra chief minister Uddhav Thackeray said that the state government is on the verge of announcing a lockdown to curb the spread of infection. "I cannot rule out imposing a lockdown if the current COVID-19 situation prevails. People have become complacent. In a couple of days, strict restrictions will be issued to curb COVID-19. If the number of cases keeps increasing, there could be a shortage of healthcare infrastructure in the next 15-20 days," he said in an address to the people on Friday evening.
