Vikram lander raised lot of dust during lunar landing, created ejecta halo

When the Vikram lander of the Chandrayaan-3 mission made a soft landing on the moon it raised a lot of dust that led to creation of a bright patch, called as the ejecta halo, around the spacecraft, the ISRO said on Friday. According to a research paper published in the Journal of the Indian Society of Remote Sensing, scientists at ISRO used the Orbiter High Resolution Camera (OHRC) onboard the Chandrayaan-2 orbiter to study the lunar surface hours before and after the soft-landing of Vikram lander on the moon on August 23. “During the action of descent stage thrusters and the consequent landing, a significant amount of lunar surficial epiregolith material got ejected, resulting in a reflectance anomaly or ‘ejecta halo’,” scientists at the National Remote Sensing Centre (NRSC) said in the paper. They estimated that the landing event had ejected 2.09 tonnes of lunar regolith over 108.4 square metre area. The scientists examined pre-and post-landing images of the landing site acquired

‘Privileged’: PM Modi on being invited to Ayodhya’s Ram Mandir consecration ritual

During his visit to poll-bound Madhya Pradesh’s Chitrakoot, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday said the Ram Temple in Ayodhya was on the verge of completion and that he felt it was a great privilege for him to receive an invitation for the consecration ritual of the temple. Speaking at a public event at Tulsi Peeth of Jagadguru Rambhadracharya, PM Modi said that “in the thousand years of slavery, various attempts were made to uproot India in different ways” and one of these was the “complete destruction of Sanskrit”. “Though we gained independence, some individuals still harbour antipathy towards Sanskrit. If someone discovers a forgotten language script, such people celebrate it, but they do not respect Sanskrit, which has existed for thousands of years. If people in other countries know their mother tongue, they appreciate it, but these individuals consider knowing Sanskrit as a sign of backwardness,” PM Modi said. The prime minister added that “those with this mind-set have b

India steps up border drone defence to wade off surprise attacks like Hamas did on Israel

In a move to step up monitoring activities along the borders with neighbouring China and Pakistan, especially along the Himalayas, India is setting up a surveillance system with drones to avoid surprise attacks like the one from Hamas in Israel. The country’s defence officials met with six home-grown vendors of surveillance and reconnaissance drones over the past week and an order is expected to be announced as soon as next month, Bloomberg quoted people who did not wish to be named as saying. In the past, India has experienced unexpected surprise attacks. For instance, in 2008, assailants hailing from Pakistan, armed with assault weapons and grenades, managed to infiltrate Mumbai by sea and killed 166 people. Meanwhile, South Korean and US troops have started live-fire exercises this week to hone their ability to respond to potential “Hamas-style surprise artillery attacks” by North Korea, South Korea’s military said Friday. The two forces regularly conduct live fire and other tra

Online gaming companies get tax notices worth Rs 1 lakh crore

Indian tax authorities have issued show cause notices worth about 1 trillion rupees ($12.03 billion) to online gaming companies, a government official said on Wednesday. “The total amount of show-cause notices sent to online gaming companies is around Rs 1 lakh crore,” an official said on October 25, requesting anonymity. The government and online gaming are in a tussle over the payment of 28 per cent Goods and Services Tax (GST) instead of 18 per cent for the period up to October 1, 2023. While the online gaming firms feel the 28 per cent tax is applicable only starting October 1, the government is of the opinion that the October 1 revision only provided clarity to a law that was already in force. The official, however, said that there is no data yet of foreign gaming companies registering in India since October 1. The government has amended the GST law, making it mandatory for overseas online gaming companies to register in India from October 1. The GST Council had in August c

India to treat Pakistan’s reference to Kashmir at UNSC meeting “with contempt it deserves”

India will treat a reference by Pakistan to Kashmir during a United Nations Security Council (UNSC) meeting on the Israel-Gaza situation with the contempt it deserves and will not dignify it with a response, India’s Deputy Permanent Representative at the UN, Ambassador R Ravindra said. “Before I end, there was a remark of habitual nature by one delegation referring to Union Territories that are integral and inalienable parts of my country,” Ravindra said. “I would treat these remarks with contempt they deserve and not dignify them with a response in the interest of time,” Ravindra said. Ravindra’s remarks came on Tuesday after Pakistan’s UN envoy Munir Akram made reference to Kashmir at the Security Council meeting on the situation in the Middle East. US Secretary of State Antony Blinken has also drawn a parallel between the terrorist attacks by Lashkar-e-Taiba in Mumbai and Hamas in Israel, emphasising that all acts of terrorism are “unlawful and unjustifiable.” Speaking at the U
