Akal Farms: Welcome to this ‘mini-Punjab’ In Tamil Nadu

Image
A small band of happy, hard-working Sikh farmers are growing a little Punjab deep inside southern Tamil Nadu’s backward and drought-prone Ramanathapuram. Rustic rural Punjab comes alive in a stretch of 100 acres of Akal Farms where aroma of genuine  sarson ka saag, dal tadka, aaloo gobi ki sabji  and  lassi  fills up the air and  charpais  thrown in here and there complete the Punjabi village setting at this arid village, some 100 km from the temple town of Madurai. Yes, Singh is king not just in Punjab, but in this tiny village of Vallandai, where farmers from Sangrur, Moga and Ludhiana have grown an orchard in the deserted and abandoned lands of the parched district. Seeds of ‘green revolution’ of this band of Sardars have today grown into an orchard, akin to an oasis in the desert, and its demonstration effect is immense. Officials of the agriculture and horticulture department troop to this village and showcase it to the others as an example of fruits of hard work. Farmers of the

How the British were the worst colonisers ever known to humanity

As India enters its 75th year of Independence, you would imagine that most skeletons of the horrific colonial past are known to one and all. This couldn’t be further from the truth. In the recent past, social media has been rife with videos and forwards that talk about the brutality of imperialism and the extent to which it financially and socially plundered India. Reading MJ Akbar’s new book,  Doolally Sahib and the Black Zamindar: Racism and Revenge in the British Raj  (Bloomsbury, Rs 899), one gets a sense of how the British Raj nestled itself in the Indian subcontinent and how it not only ended the Indian way of life and values but more significantly, how it instilled a system and mindset that embraced its exploitative ways. Meticulously researched, a hallmark of Akbar’s works, the gripping narrative sheds light on how the British managed to rule over such a vast piece of land with only a handful of officials. While the data gives an overview of the extent of the pillage — accordi

How Imran Khan was the best thing to have happened to Pakistan — from India’s perspective

Pakistan remains a predictably unpredictable nation. While its constitutional and political chaos makes instant headlines in India, it is nothing new. However, the more important part is the impact for India irrespective of the outcomes in Pakistan. One has also to appreciate the situation in Pakistan in the larger context of our neighbourhood as well as the global situation. Pakistan, Sri Lanka and Myanmar are in a state of extreme instability which will have a spillover impact on India. In addition, there is an opportunity opening in Nepal with the country attempting to reduce its dependence on China. Over and above this, the Ukraine war is also impacting India. Overall, the regional and extra-regional flux demands India to be on top of the game and handle the Pakistan factor with finesse. Irrespective of the outcome in Pakistan, Imran Khan has kick-started a long season of political instability. At the fag end of his tenure he has painted himself into a ‘Desh Bhakt’ and his politic

Explaining India’s position on Ukraine war, West’s coercive pressure, China-Russia tangle and pitfalls in New Delhi’s pursuit of neutrality

Image
At a recent closed-door meeting in New Delhi that Firstpost was privy to, a visiting high-ranking European Union official expressed Europe’s open displeasure at India’s stance on Ukraine war. The message was unequivocal. Europe is not happy with the position of neutrality that New Delhi has adopted, given Russia’s clear attack on UN charter and rules-based order, and while the European nations are cognizant of India’s compulsions, the seriousness of the situation calls for New Delhi to jettison its neutrality, unequivocally condemn Russia and reflect that shift in the voting pattern at the UN. “You can’t be neutral on these sort of things,” said the official. Why is India the centre of global diplomatic attention? The EU official is part of a steady stream of over a dozen foreign diplomats who have descended on India in the past two weeks. With the Ukraine war dividing the world into two geopolitical blocs, the bulk were from the West (the United States alone had sent two). With a f
