Opinion | Criticism of the Central Vista project is a derivative of perennial Narendra Modi hate

As soon as the Narendra Modi government unveiled its Central Vista Redevelopment plan in September 2019, we witnessed coordinated cacophony from a coterie of people questioning the proposed project. The stage for the misleading campaign against the Central Vista project was set by a Modi-hating columnist, who in his The Print column on 28 September, equated the prime minister with an “emperor who wants to build his capital like many in the past”. It took the columnist only a fortnight to trash a project of national importance, details of which were first reported by The Hindu , citing ministerial sources, on 12 September 2019. Another attack followed, and this time it was aimed at Bimal Patel — the architect of the Central Vista project — and this too was led by The Print gang. Calling Patel “new India’s go-to architect,” it questioned his selection process and branded him as “facilitator of Modi’s dream”. Later, continuing its tirade against Bimal Patel, The Print followed up it

e-Shram generates hope for unorganised sector workers, but hardships won't disappear overnight

“I faced salary cuts, then worked without pay for a few months, and was finally forced to resign. I could not bear the costs of my daughter’s education and family's expenses,” says Atanu Sarkar, a driver at a private firm who quit his job in June. Sarkar, a Kolkata resident, stays in his ancestral home with wife and daughter. Since July, he has been working with a transport aggregator that provides bike rides to passengers. As COVID-19 gripped the nation and brought businesses and activities to a complete halt, Sarkar — like hundreds and thousands of Indians without a fixed job and social security — increasingly found it hard to make ends meet. Before the pandemic, Sarkar would earn Rs 385 a day on average. Now, he earns Rs 300-320 every day. “That’s not all, I have to pay the company its share of 20-22 percent of my total daily,” he says. India's unorganised sector, which constitutes over 80 percent of the country's workforce and contributes around 50 percent of its GD

What are the farm laws? Farmers' Produce Trade and Commerce (Promotion and Facilitation) Act, 2020: This act provides scope for farmers to expand their area of trade from select areas to "any place of production, collection, aggregation". They can also move to electronic trading and e-commerce for scheduled produce. This law prohibits state governments to levy any market fee, cess on farmers, traders, and electronic trading platforms. Book Review: 'The Great Indian Mathematicians' offers a unique vantage point of India's contribution to the field

If you have a keen interest in either mathematics or history, perhaps both, Gaurav Tekriwal’s new book is right up your alley. Titled 'The Great Indian Mathematicians: 15 Pioneers Who Put Indian Mathematics on the World Map', it has been published by Puffin Books. Apart from being an educator and author, Tekriwal is also the founder and president of the Vedic Maths Forum India. This should explain his tremendous passion for the subject that he writes about. I did not grow up enjoying mathematics, so I am always a bit puzzled when people wax eloquent about how fascinated they are by this subject, its real-life applications, and its connections to philosophy and aesthetics. I guess a good teacher in one’s early years makes a huge difference and helps cultivate an appreciation for mathematics and its mysteries. Tekriwal’s book called out to me because it looks at Indian history from a unique vantage point — the contributions of Indian mathematicians spread out over 5000 years. A
