Congress MP Rajeev Satav passes away at 46; Rahul Gandhi, Randeep Surjewala express condolences

Pune/New Delhi: Congress MP Rajeev Satav died at a private hospital in Pune on Sunday, days after recovering from the coronavirus infection, hospital sources said. He was 46. Satav was on ventilator support at the hospital after his health deteriorated. He had tested positive for COVID-19 on 22 April. He was later diagnosed with a new viral infection and was in a critical condition, they said. Congress leader Rahul Gandhi condoled his demise and said it is a big loss to him. "I'm very sad at the loss of my friend Rajeev Satav. He was a leader with huge potential who embodied the ideals of the Congress. It's a big loss for us all. My condolences and love to his family," he tweeted. Satav, who hailed from Maharashtra, was considered to be close to the former Congress chief. COVID-19: Plasma therapy not found effective, likely to be dropped from clinical management guidelines

New Delhi: Plasma therapy on COVID-19 patients has not been found effective in reducing the progression to severe disease or death and is likely to be dropped from the clinical management guidelines, sources said. In a meeting of the ICMR-National Task Force for COVID-19 on Friday, all members were in favour of removing the use of convalescent plasma from the Clinical Guidance for Management of Adult COVID-19 Patients citing its ineffectiveness and inappropriate use in several cases, they said. The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) will issue an advisory on the matter soon, they said. The present guidelines allows "off label" use of plasma therapy at the stage of early moderate disease, that is, within seven days of the onset of symptoms and if there is availability of a high titre donor plasma. Amaravati: A designated CID court on Saturday night remanded arrested YSR Congress MP K Raghu Ramakrishna Raju to 14 days in judicial custody but directed that he be admitted to a hospital for treatment of injuries allegedly caused due to police torture. Cyclone Tauktae: NDRF mobilises 100 teams with 4,700 personnel for rescue ops in six states

New Delhi:  The National Disaster Response Force has increased the number of teams from 53 to 100 to undertake relief and rescue measures in view of the impending Cyclone Tauktae , an official said on Saturday. Each NDRF team has a strength of a total 47 personnel and, hence, the total manpower identified for the task is 4,700 rescuers. NDRF director general SN Pradhan tweeted that these teams were being mobilised for deployment in the coastal regions of Kerala, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Gujarat, Goa and Maharashtra. On Friday, he had said 53 teams were being committed for the cyclonic storm that was developing in the Arabian sea. COVID-19 second wave: Plea in SC seeks establishment of oxygen plants in all 738 districts with PM-CARES fund

New Delhi:  A PIL has been filed in the Supreme Court seeking various relief measures for the country, including immediate procurement of COVID-19 vaccines and installation of a liquid medical oxygen (LMO) plant in each of the 738 districts using donations received under the PM-CARES fund. The petitioner has made the Centre, the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), the Prime Minister's Citizen Assistance and Relief in Emergency Situation (PM-CARES) fund and all states as parties in the plea. Chhattisgarh extends lockdown in Raipur till 31 May, but allows shops to remain open till 5 pm

The Chhattisgarh government has extended the lockdown in Raipur district till 31 May and in Bilaspur district till 24 May to curb the spread of coronavirus , but granted more relaxations in economic and other activities, officials said. As per the news rules, shops and establishments can remain open till 5 pm on working days during the lockdown period, reports said. The state govt has also asked the remaining 26 districts to extend lockdown till 31 May. "The lockdown will not be lifted in the state. Only certain relaxations will be granted, depending on the COVID-19 situation and risks in each of the districts," an official from the public relations department told PTI . The lockdown, currently in force in all 28 districts of the state, was set to end in most regions on 15 May midnight. The new restrictions and relaxations will remain in effect till 31 May, the official said. Hany Babu, accused in Elgar Parishad case, tests positive for COVID-19

Mumbai: Delhi University assistant professor Hany Babu, arrested in the Elgar Parishad-Maoist links case, tested positive for coronavirus infection on Thursday, his family said. Babu was taken to government-run JJ Hospital here on 12 May night from prison, the family said in a statement. "About 7.30 pm (on 13 May), when Hany's mother arrived at the hospital to meet her son, she was informed by a nurse that Hany has tested COVID positive. We are yet to receive any official information," it said. He should be shifted from JJ Hospital to a multi- speciality hospital where he can be treated for COVID-19 as well his eye infection, it added. Earlier, his family had said that Babu, lodged at Taloja Prison in neighbouring Navi Mumbai, was suffering from acute eye infection and should get proper treatment. Amid the surge in COVID-19 cases, the Madhya Pradesh Board of Secondary Education (MPBSE) has cancelled the Class 10 board exams while Class 12 exams have been postponed until further orders. When the pandemic's second wave swept India in mid-April, Deepak Patel, an aviation reporter for the Press Trust of India in New Delhi, noticed something odd. Whenever he perused the local papers from his home state of Gujarat—Divya Bhaskar, Gujarat Samachar, and Sandesh—reports about COVID-19 cases , and the obituaries that filled the pages, didn’t match the government statistics on cases and deaths. Patel began tallying the numbers and posting his findings on Twitter each day. On 26 April, he pointed out that in Sandesh’s Rajkot edition (different cities have their own editions), seven out of eighteen pages contained only obituaries—a total of 287 deaths—while official figures recorded just 26. West Bengal records 20,846 new COVID-19 cases in highest single-day spike

Kolkata: West Bengal on Friday registered its highest single-day spike of 20,846 new COVID-19 cases, taking the overall count to 10,94,802, the health department said in its bulletin. The toll rose to 12,993 after 136 more people, including five eminent doctors, succumbed to the infection, the bulletin said. Senior BJP leader Mukul Roy and his wife Krishna are among those who contracted the disease. Roy, who is the saffron party's vice president, is currently undergoing home isolation, sources in the health department said. Of the 136 deaths, 67 were due to the comorbidities where COVID-19 was incidental. North 24 Parganas district accounted for 42 fatalities and Kolkata 34.
