Why Twitter row refuses to die down in India, and how government can handle this

Image
Twitter is in the news once again for its skirmishes with the law. In a notice sent on 27 June to Twitter, MeitY (Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology) has reportedly asked Twitter to either comply with its previous notices till 4 July, or forgo its ‘intermediary status’. Although there is lack of clarity of the content of these notices and  differing   reports  of the scope of non-compliance, it is clear that the government is not in the mood to take the same lying down. This stance of the government fits into its current proactive regulatory approach that has developed over the course of the last year. Although the platform  reportedly  complied with the orders on the last day so as to not lose its “intermediary status”, it simultaneously filed for  judicial review  of some of these orders. Why is ‘intermediary status’ so important to Twitter? Social media intermediaries like Twitter essentially provide a service that allows users to generate, post and share content

Voice of World War 1 Garhwal Rifles soldier returns home after 100 years from the archives

Dehradun: More than a century after he died, an audio recording of Rifleman Shib Singh Kaintura, who served in the Garhwal Rifles during the First World War, has reached India. As a prisoner-of-war at the Half-moon camp in Germany during the Great War, Shib Singh never returned home. After serving as a prisoner-of-war, Singh passed away and was buried at Golders Green Crematorium in London. The Lautarchiv (sound archive) at the Humboldt University in Berlin has provided Firstpost with a rare shellac recording of a Garhwal Rifles soldier. The recording is among the odd 7,000 that the Royal Prussian Phonographic Commission holds in its archives. There are only a few recordings available in the university collection of Indian soldiers who served as POWs during the First World War. Rifleman Shib Singh Kaintura, regimental number 2396, of the 1st/39th Garhwal Rifles was born in Luthiyag village (mentioned Luthiag in the documents). At that time, this village was part of Tehri Garhwal. I

'She's given meaning to my life': At 88, Bill Aitken's love for Nanda Devi remains as young as ever

Image
In the upper reaches of Uttarakhand stands a mountain that has an aura, quite unlike the other giants that rise around it. Or perhaps “her” would be a more appropriate reference, given that this mountain, Nanda Devi, is a manifestation of Goddess Parvati and is worshipped as a deity in the region. The double-humped giant has been a source of fascination for all kinds of people. The local populace revere her for centuries now and has built temples in her honour. Even before Nanda Devi (7,816m) was declared the highest mountain in British India, mountaineers and explorers were fascinated by her exquisite form. As for author Bill Aitken, he was simply  “khenchoed”  or drawn in by her grace. It’s a rather pleasant May morning in the hill town of Landour, a short hop from the bustling tourist hub of Mussoorie. The only landmark I have to Aitken’s home is the Wynberg-Allen School. Most folks I enquire with haven’t heard of him, nor are they aware of his home, Oakless. One gentleman suggest

Maa Kali row: Why it is so cool to malign Hindu gods and goddesses, but it may not be that easy now

Image
A filmmaker named Leena Manimekalai from Toronto, Ontario (Canada), is in the news for making a documentary that shows a Hindu Goddess, Maa Kali, smoking a cigarette. For obvious reasons, there has been an outrage against the image and video, for depicting the Goddess in an insulting manner. The filmmaker in question, as evident from her Twitter feed, has immediately been highlighted by Left propaganda mouthpieces, with the obvious aim of turning her into some kind of an “oppressed” martyr facing the “fascist Hindutva” brigade. In her recent “interview”, she felt the strong urge to tell the world that “India is sinking into a dark hole of hate and bigotry”. Never mind the fact that she has openly denigrated a Hindu Goddess, never mind the fact that just a few days back a Hindu in India was  beheaded by Muslims for just supporting Nupur Sharma who had quoted from the Hadith. The furore on social media has made the Indian High Commission ask the Canadian authorities to stop screening th
