Uttar Pradesh: BJP MLA smashes coconut for inauguration; road breaks but coconut does not

COVID-19 pandemic not over in India, country fighting virus together, says Amit Shah

India saw a welcome change in 2014 as the Bharatiya Janata Party government came to power with full majority and provided stability seven years before the COVID-19 pandemic hit, Union Home Minister Amit Shah said on Saturday. “We are fortunate enough that before the COVID-19 pandemic came to the world, India saw a welcome change… the BJP came to power and Modi ji became the prime minister," Shah said at the Hindustan Times Leadership Summit . Shah said that after Prime Minister Narendra Modi came to power, 60 percent of people who were neglected by previous governments became part of the mainstream. “Their bank accounts were opened and many more schemes were initiated for them," he said, adding that these 80 crore people were never a part of India’s progress. The leader said that in 2014, India received a form of stability after decades of coalition politics at the Centre, seven years before COVID-19 hit. “India was in a state of ‘policy paralysis’," he said. The Indian-American paradox: Indians expect them to be Indians, but they are not

The promotion of Parag Agarwal to the position of CEO of Twitter created a bit of a commotion online. Many celebrated the fact that several Indian-origin people now head large technology companies such as Alphabet, Microsoft, Adobe, IBM and now Twitter. Elon Musk said something to the effect that he appreciated talented people from India. Others bemoaned the fact that many Indians apparently had to leave the country to do well. The usual reasons were trotted out: Reservations prevent the meritorious from rising; the bureaucrats and the system mess everything up; there is no room for independent thought, and you must kowtow to the Big Men on Campus; and so on. There is a little truth in all of them. In this narrative, the US is the place where they reward merit; there is an opportunity for all; and if you keep your nose clean and work hard and produce results, they will let you rise to the top. There is a little truth in all these claims as well. But that’s not the whole story, eithe

How Yogi’s infra and power push propelled Uttar Pradesh into a higher orbit, but will it be enough for electoral success?

In area, Uttar Pradesh is double the size of England; and in population, only five countries in the world can beat the state’s population. Being a parliamentarian from Uttar Pradesh for two decades, Yogi Adityanath had this clear cognisance that only world-class infrastructure and connectivity can make the state prosperous. So, in 2017, when he took the oath of office, he took the challenge head on. Within the first few weeks, he sat at the drawing board with his team, and charted out the journey of a new Uttar Pradesh. What we have observed by 2021 is not less than a miracle. We should give credit wherever it’s due. The Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) built the 165-km Greater Noida-Agra Expressway. The Samajwadi Party (SP) built the 302-km Agra-Lucknow Expressway. So, in the 15 years of the BSP-SP rule, people of Uttar Pradesh got 467 km of expressways, limited to western UP. In contrast, Yogi Adityanath has taken the expressway network to a completely different level. Prime Minister Nare

Omicron variant likely to be present in all major Indian cities, not coming from airports, says top Indian scientist

Detection of the Omicron variant in a COVID-19-positive person with no travel history in India affirms that the “heavily mutated” virus is not just coming from airports, but is already here and likely to be present in all major cities, the chief of CSIR-CCMB told News18.com . CCMB director Dr Rakesh Mishra, however, said that the positive aspect is that the variant might be causing negligible symptoms, so despite its probable community transmission, it has not had a huge impact, so far. Hyderabad-based Centre for Cellular and Molecular Biology (CCMB) is a fundamental life sciences research institute which works under the aegis of the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), an autonomous body established by the Government of India. On Thursday, India registered the first cases of the Omicron variant in Karnataka, prompting the government to step up surveillance of international passengers. One of the two patients is a 46-year-old resident of Bengaluru with no travel hi

Omicron in India: 10 passengers from South Africa go ‘missing’ in Karnataka; woman jumps home quarantine in Chandigarh

The Omicron variant, the latest ‘variant of concern’, reached Indian shores on Thursday after the government announced that two positive cases had been traced in Karnataka. As panic spread and concerns grew, the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare also published a FAQ on the new COVID-19 variant , which was first detected in South Africa, saying that given the fast pace of vaccination in India and high exposure to the Delta variant, the severity of the disease is anticipated to be low. So, what’s been happening and how is India dealing with the new variant. • The Karnataka government has directed local officials to investigate how the 66-year-old man, who tested positive for Omicron, 'escaped'. On Friday, it was reported that the 66-year-old man had left the country after taking a COVID-19 negative certificate from a private lab. Moreover, they are also trying to track down 10 more people who reportedly went 'missing' from the Bengaluru airport. • The Maharasht
