New Delhi: Niti Aayog Member (Agriculture) Ramesh Chand has said protesting farmers have not fully or properly understood the new farm laws, asserting that these legislations have potential to increase farm income in a big way. Delhi's air quality remains in 'poor' category; pollution may worsen due to cold weather, low wind speed

New Delhi: Delhi's air quality remained "poor" on Sunday and is likely to deteriorate further amid a dip in the mercury and the wind speed. The city's air quality index (AQI) was 245 at 9 am. The 24-hour average was 231 on Saturday, 137 on Friday, 302 on Thursday and 413 on Wednesday. An AQI between zero and 50 is considered "good", 51 and 100 "satisfactory", 101 and 200 "moderate", 201 and 300 "poor", 301 and 400 "very poor", and 401 and 500 "severe". The maximum wind speed was 15 kmph on Saturday. It is likely to be 8 to 12 kmph on Sunday and Monday, according to the India Meteorological Department. Winds are predicted to slow down on Sunday. Therefore, Delhi's air quality is likely to deteriorate further and remain in the "poor" to "very poor" category over the next two days, it said. India's COVID-19 caseload nears 94 lakh with 41,810 new cases; recovery rate at 93.71%

New Delhi:  India's COVID-19 caseload inched closer to the 94-lakh mark, while the number of people who have recuperated from the disease crossed 88 lakh pushing the national recovery rate to 93.71 percent, according to the Union Health Ministry data updated on Sunday. The total coronavirus cases mounted to 93,92,919 with 41,810 new infections being reported in a day, while the death toll climbed to 1,36,696 with 496 new fatalities, the data updated at 8 am showed. The active COVID-19 caseload remained below 5 lakh for the 19th consecutive day. There are 4,53,956 active coronavirus infections in the country which comprises 4.83 percent of the total caseload, the data stated. The number of people who have recuperated from the disease surged to 88,02,267 pushing the national recovery rate to 93.71 percent, while the COVID-19 case fatality rate stands at 1.46 percent. Raipur:  An officer of the CRPF's jungle warfare unit, CoBRA, was killed while nine commandos were injured after Maoists triggered an IED blast in Chhattisgarh's Sukma district, security officials said on Sunday. They said the improvised explosive device blast took place in the Chintalnar forest area of the district around 9 pm on Saturday and the injured personnel were evacuated by a Mi-17 V5 helicopter of the IAF around midnight. Assistant Commandant Nitin Bhalerao, 33, succumbed to injuries suffered in the blast in the early hours of Sunday, and nine commandos, including the team leader who is a second-in-command rank officer, were injured, they said. Seven commandos are being treated at a hospital in Raipur while two are being given medical care at a unit hospital at Chintalnar, located in the south Bastar area of the state, they said. New Delhi: Attorney General KK Venugopal has declined consent for initiation of criminal contempt proceedings against Prashant Bhushan for his tweets in which he was critical of Chief Justice of India (CJI) SA Bobde being provided a special helicopter by the Madhya Pradesh government, saying the activist-lawyer later expressed regret. Delhi govt issues work-from-home orders for 50% of its staff working for non-essential services

New Delhi: The Delhi government on Saturday issued work-from-home orders for 50 percent of its employees associated with non-essential services and advised private establishments to follow the practice as far as possible amid a surge in COVID-19 cases in the national capital. Delhi chief secretary and DDMA executive committee chairman Vijay Dev, in an order, said all Delhi government offices, autonomous bodies, public sector undertakings, corporations, local bodies will function with officers of grade-one level or equivalent and above to the extent of 100 percent. "The remaining staff will attend up to 50 percent as per requirement to be assessed by heads of the departments concerned (remaining 50 percent of the staff will work from home) till 31 December, 2020, or till further orders whichever is earlier," stated the DDMA order. Delhi L-G okays proposal to cut presence of non-essential services staff in govt offices by 50% as COVID-19 cases rise

New Delhi: Lt Governor Anil Baijal on Saturday approved a proposal of the Delhi government to reduce the presence of its non-essential services employees in offices by 50 percent amid a spike in COVID-19 in the National Capital, Revenue Minister Kailash Gahlot said. "The heads of departments will decide about how to implement it according to the requirement of staff at their disposal," he told PTI . According to officials, the move, applicable to all Delhi government employees except grade-one and above officers, aims to bring down the number of non-essential services staff in the offices in view of the COVID-19 pandemic. The Delhi government had also sought recommendations to private establishments to stagger office timings, reduce the presence of their staff, and encourage work from home. The proposal from the Delhi government's revenue department was sent to the Lt Governor who is also chairman of Delhi Disaster Management Authority (DDMA) for approval, Gahlot said

Farmers' protest: Slogans, songs and drumbeats fill the air at Delhi's Burari ground

New Delhi: Shouting slogans, singing songs and carrying flags in reds, greens and blues, about 400 farmers from various groups and states on Saturday gathered at north Delhi’s Burari ground, where the government had allowed them to hold a peaceful protest against the new farm laws. Indian government issues fresh guidelines for cab aggregators like Uber, Ola putting a cap on surge pricing

The ministry of road and Transport highways, India announced new guidelines for cab aggregators through a notification released on 26 November. The ministry issued the guidelines under the part of Motor Vehicles (Amendment) Act, 2019, that states take into account before issuing a license to state aggregators. The regulations define cab aggregators as digital mediators or marketplaces for passengers to connect with drivers for the intent of transportation. “The city taxi fare indexed by WPI (Wholesale Price Index)for the current year shall be the base fare chargeable to customers availing aggregator service,” said the guidelines issued by the ministry of road and transport highways. The cancellation fee is capped at 10 percent of the total fare, not exceeding Rs 100 for both users and drivers. India reports 41,322 new COVID-19 infections; active cases see drop after three straight days of rising graph

New Delhi:  India's COVID-19 caseload climbed to 93.51 lakh on Saturday after 41,322 new infections were reported in a day, said the health ministry. The total number of coronavirus cases increased to 93,51,109 and the toll climbed to 1,36,200 with the virus claiming 485 more lives, the data updated at 8 am showed. With 87,59,969 being cured of the virus so far, the national recovery rate stands at 93.68 percent. After showing an upward trend for three days in a row, the active COVID-19 caseload decreased to 4,54,940, remaining below five lakh for the 18th consecutive day.
