EdTech: A force for good and defining role it has in inspiring a whole new generation

Students today are growing up with technology. The kids born in this decade are ‘digital natives’, meaning they will understand and use technology in substantially better ways than the older ‘digital immigrant’ generations. In fact, the fundamental change in the way young people communicate, create, and learn has already begun. This shift is most evident in a sector that has traditionally been slow in adopting modern trends. Education has not merely been touched by technology but is being transformed by it. This is not to suggest that we can predict the exact future of learning. At the very least though, the last two years have given us glimpses into how students, schools, teachers and parents can use technology to enhance learning without the constraints of space and time. We saw millions of students move to remote learning overnight during the pandemic. Thanks to this sudden large-scale trial, we know today that it’s possible to incorporate multiple modes of delivery in education. W

Precision Engineering: Paving the way for India's self-reliance

Indian economy’s recovery from pandemic-induced stresses and business disruptions has received a thumbs up from IMF and global economists. The provisional estimates of GDP released on 31 May 2022, showing the real GDP growth in 2021-22 at 8.7 per cent is a strong affirmative indicator. However, the global uncertainties resulting from sudden and unforeseen seismic geopolitical tremors brought to the fore the need of developing secure indigenous global supply chains and concomitant domestic supply networks to respond effectively to emerging challenges. The prevailing geopolitical hurdles have further enhanced the crucial importance of Atmanirbharta in strengthening the country’s digital infrastructure, especially at a time when India is driving tech-led growth and digital inclusion through schemes like BharatNet, encompassing rural broadband connectivity and up-gradation of the fibre network laid across 2.5 lakh Gram Panchayats. Despite the real GDP in 2021-22 being 1.5 per cent highe

Modinomics, 13.5% growth rate, and how India raced past Britain

Image
India’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) grew at 13.5 per cent in the first quarter of 2022-23 (1QFY23), the fastest pace in four quarters, with the Gross Value Added (GVA) too rising by 12.7 per cent. While 13.5 per cent is lower than the 16.2 per cent GDP uptick projected by the Reserve Bank of India’s Monetary Policy Committee (MPC), the best thing about the solid 13.5 per cent growth is that it is a good 3.8 per cent above pre-pandemic levels. This indicates that not only is the Indian economy sharply back on track but has also regained its pre-pandemic mojo. Those claiming that base effect had a role to play, forget that in the June 2021 quarter, the GDP growth was 20.1 per cent. If anything, despite a high base effect, the fact that India still logged 13.5 per cent in the June 2022 quarter, making the GDP number even more commendable. GVA from agriculture, forestry and fishing continued to grow through the pandemic and rose 4.5 per cent in the June 2022 quarter too, yet again, while

An organised, robust response to stubble burning is need of the hour

One way to solve North India’s air pollution is not to keep feeling it but to keep fighting while learning from it. Although blankets of smog envelop the capital’s skies in November-December, poor AQI is an all-year-round phenomenon. One of the top five factors contributing to pollution is stubble (parali) burning, in a list including vehicular emissions, industrial emissions, power plants and dust. The need of the hour is an informally assembled but professionally focused team aligned by ideas and supported by institutions convened by outcome-oriented individuals that funnels into one think-do-tank. Paddy is sown across 74 lakh acres of farmland in Punjab, generating a staggering 222 lakh tonnes of stubble (about 3,000 kg of stubble per acre). Industrial farming and coercive legislation have shrunk the time between harvesting paddy and sowing the next crop of wheat to 30 days. This combined with no economic incentive to manage stubble, means that farmers in Punjab burn their stubble

Watch: Little girl hugs Ganpati Bappa idol, cries as it's taken for visarjan

Commenced on 31 August, the 10-day festival of Ganesh Chaturthi ended on Friday, 9 September with Ganesh visarjan (immersion). A video of one such incident was tweeted on Friday in which a little girl can be seen crying and holding the Ganpati idol tightly, and refusing to let his family members take him for the visarjan. The lady who appears to be her mother can be heard saying, “Let him go, he will come again.”. The little one can be seen deeply saddened and emotional by the departure of the elephant god. The video was shared on Twitter by Rameshwar Sharma, member of BJP in Madhya Pradesh, with the caption, “Touching, Ganpati bappa next year you come soon.”. What Subhas Chandra Bose’s statue at India Gate means: India as warfare state in a warring world

Image
Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurating the Central Vista complex and unveiling Subhas Chandra Bose’s statue at India Gate represents a moment of great significance. Parliamentarians with the duty of running the country will finally occupy a building complex suitable to their needs, the solemnity of their preoccupations and constructed by an independent vibrant India. Hopefully, its proceedings will exhibit a renewed decorum as well. Yet, it is not of the new Central Vista complex which is truly significant, important though it is as the nation’s new stately parliamentary complex. It is the installation of the statue of Subhas Chandra Bose in full military uniform at India Gate that is the momentous event. The statue symbolises an ancient historic tradition of Kshatriya valour that had faltered under Mahatma Gandhi and Jawaharlal Nehru, despite the efforts of Subhas Chandra Bose in the 1940s, until its gradual restoration after India’s self-inflicted military setback of 1962. 'Congress has a long history of being anti-Hindu', says BJP on Rahul Gandhi's video with George Ponnaiah

New Delhi : Bhartiya Janta Party (BJP) has reacted to Congress leader Rahul Gandhi’s meeting with the controversial Tamil pastor George Ponnaiah in the Kanyakumari district of Tamil Nadu. BJP’s Shehzad Poonawalla said, “It’s Rahul Gandhi’s Nafrat Jodo Abhiyan. Today they’ve made a person like George Ponnaiah the poster boy of Bharat Jodo Yatra who challenged, threatened Hindus and said inappropriate things about Bharat Mata. Congress has a long history of being anti-Hindu.” Meanwhile, Congress leader Jairam Ramesh said,” It bears no relation whatsoever to what is recorded in the audio. This is typical BJP mischief that has become more desperate after the successful launch of Bharat Jodo Yatra.” A video clip of Rahul Gandhi’s interaction with the Tamil Nadu pastor went viral, in which Rahul Gandhi can be heard asking, “Jesus Christ is a form of God? Is that right?” to which the Tamil Nadu priest George Ponniah replied, “He is the real God.” Ponniah goes on to say, “God reveals him(s

Haryana: Six die of drowning during Ganesh idol immersions in Mahendragarh & Sonipat

New Delhi:  As many as six people lost their lives during the Ganesh idol immersions in two different incidents in Haryana’s Mahendragarh and Sonipat, said the officials on Saturday. Over 20 people had gone for the immersion near a canal in the Jhagadoli village in Mahendragarh. Nine youths were swept away by the current of water in the canal when the group was carrying a nearly seven-foot idol for immersion. The district administration with the assistance of the NDRF launched a rescue operation. While four died, others were rescued and hospitalised. In a similar incident, two youths drowned in the Yamuna river in Sonipat as well. “Around 20-22 people had gone to a canal near village Jhagadoli in Mahendragarh for Ganesh idol immersion. The Devil’s Advocate: Dear social media freedom fighters, international diplomacy doesn’t run on emotion and outrage

Historian Richard Gott writes in his book, Britain’s Empire: Resistance, Repression and Revolt , ‘The rulers of the empire may one day be perceived to rank with the dictators of the 20th century as the authors of crimes against humanity.’ The empire’s dark, brutal history is no secret, not at least to anyone in India. It naturally inspires anger, disgust and is the source of trauma for so many who continue to try and outlive its memory. Much then has been made of India’s two-fold stance, one of active decolonisation on the ground — from renaming streets to revamping colonial buildings — and the contrasting, performative respect being shown to the late Queen Elizabeth II on her demise. Most people ranting about this conflicted, somewhat awkward display of colonial re-commitment, believe that international diplomacy, like social media trends, runs on outrage and emotion, when it is a far more complex process of selective disengagement. The history of the Empire is also the history of r

Fixing the next date of hearing for 12 September, the apex court asked the officer from the UP health department to be present in the court. Since the child is young, the country’s organ donation laws may become a hindrance. It is to be seen what decision the state government and the Supreme Court will take keeping in mind the special circumstances and the child’s desire to save his father’s life. According to Chapter 94 of Bhavishya Puran Uttar Parva , Anant Chaturdashi is celebrated on Chaturdashi Krishna Paksh  of Bhadrapad wherein Bhagwan Anant is worshipped.
