India@75: Why did Lord Mountbatten choose 15 August as India’s Independence Day?

Image
From 26 January 1929 to 15 August 1947 to 30 June 1948, India has witnessed many changes before its official date of Independence was declared. Finally, Lord Mountbatten, the last Viceroy of India, picked 15 August 1947 as the day that would see the end of the colonial rule. Why did he pick that particular date? We look at the chain of events  that influenced his choice. The call for “Poorna Swaraj” In 1929, Jawaharlal Nehru adopted the resolution of ‘Poorna Swaraj’, meaning full independence, at the Lahore session of the Indian National Congress (INC). The resolution came into being after the talks between the then Viceroy of India Lord Irwin and Indian delegates – Mohammad Ali Jinnah, Jawaharlal Nehru, Mahatma Gandhi and Tej Bahadur Sapru – to grant full independence failed. The British offered only dominion status to India but the leaders were not pleased. They demanded complete independence and were not ready to budge. The call for Poorna Swaraj was a shift from INC’s erstwhi

How IPTA captured the world of theatre and cinema — and turned it into Leftist backyard

Gene and Windmiller open their classic academic work on Indian communism with this pithy assessment: “A communist is commonly a zealot, moved by the intensity of his faith or of his personal commitment to the Party to assume the mantle of the prophet.” The “intensity of faith” and “personal commitment to the Party” operate on the plane of subliminal human impulses, a primal truth which the communist parties of yore grasped like none else in the history of the industrialised world. A brutal showcase of this grasp is available in the ex-communist Arthur Koestler’s disturbing classic, Darkness at Noon. The scenes of elaborate physical and psychological torture of a renegade communist in a Soviet jail still chills our bones when we read it. Like all messianic ideologies, the core of the communist ideology is self-deception, which in turn emanates from self-loathing, which in turn translates into anger against the world. There’s a reason the Bhagavad Gita continues to command such reveren

Independence Day 2022: 5 important events that led to Independent India

Just as the clock struck midnight on 14 August 1947, Jawaharlal Nehru, the first Prime Minister of independent India, proclaimed that the time had come to redeem India’s “tryst with destiny”. Since then, the nation takes great pride in celebrating its Independence Day every year on 15 August. The Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav campaign has been organising several events to make the country’s citizens more aware about the heroes of the freedom struggle as India celebrates its 75th year of independence. While several notable events occurred in India’s efforts to throw off the yoke of colonial rule, there were some major events which convinced the British government that India would not be subjugated forever in its quest for freedom. Here are five major events which had an immense impact on our freedom struggle: Revolt of 1857: The first big attempt to throw off colonial rule started just days before the centenary of the Battle of Plassey in 1757. The sepoy mutiny, started by Mangal Pandey, i

India@75: The seven Westerners who fought for India's Independence

Image
History shows that there have always been people driven to embrace others’ struggles as their own and become part of another nation’s narrative. While some have taken up weapons to fight wars in distant lands, others chose the path of non-violence. As India marks its 75 years of Independence, noted historian Ramchandra Guha to mark this auspicious moment has traversed back in time to bring to life the tale of seven such heroes, who were appalled by British colonialism and driven by a desire to support India’s freedom struggle, in his book — Rebels against the Raj: Western Fighters for India’s Freedom . They became welcomed foreigners in India and embodied what Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi once said, “A foreigner deserves to be welcomed only when he mixes with the indigenous people as sugar does with milk.” These foreigners are so entrenched in India’s history that even landmarks named after them have escaped the naming purge (the lovely shaded park in south Mumbai, opposite the gorgeo

The Farmani Naaz fatwa: How the mullahs got it wrong on bhajan-singing Muslim artiste

If you’re a Muslim, you’re never far away from mullahs telling you how to lead your life — what or what not to eat, how to dress, who or who not to marry. The urge to control your life by invoking often dubious religious doctrines or unauthenticated Hadith extends even to how to remember your dead. Fatwas fly around like confetti with semi-literate maulvis vying with each other to jump on any passing bandwagon and — with a little help from news hungry media — have their moment in the headlines. And it has mostly worked. It was this playbook that was at work when two notoriously loud-mouthed mullahs from Deoband (described by the media with some exaggeration as “Ulema”) announced a fatwa against a little-known female Muslim singer, Farmani Naaz, for singing bhajans — declaring her conduct “un-Islamic”, and telling her to seek “Allah’s forgiveness”. “Our religion does not allow us to sing bhajans of other religions. This is against the shariat as well as the basic tenets of Is

Narali Purnima 2022: Find date, shubh muhurat, mantra and significance

Narali Purnima is a festival dedicated to worshipping Lord Varun - the God of the Sea. It is observed by those involved in fishing, salt production, or any other activity related to the sea. This special festival is celebrated with great fervor and excitement in Maharashtra, especially in coastal Maharashtra and adjoining Konkani regions. On Nariyal Purnima, devotees believe that offering puja to the sea appeases God and protects fishermen from all sorts of unfortunate incidents. The word  Narali  comes from  Naral  which means coconut and  Purnima  signify full moon day. Therefore, Narali Purnima is marked on a day of the full moon during Shravan month. On this day, Maharashtrian Brahmins observe Phalahar fasting (meal based on fruits, dry fruits, and some dairy products). They prefer eating only Nariyal which is coconut during the fast. Devotees also plant trees on Narali Purnima to show their love, respect, and gratitude towards nature. Date and   Shubh Muhurat: This year, Narali

Mandeep Kaur suicide case: Family, DWC appeal to Centre for help to bring body home

Mandeep Kaur’s family has appealed to the Indian government to help them bring her body back for the last rites. The 30-year-old Indian-origin woman died by suicide at her residence in New York on 1 August after suffering years of domestic violence. Her family, who lives in Uttar Pradesh’s Bijnor has also started a petition on change.org -- #JusticeForMandeepKaur - Bring Mandeep Kaur's Body Back to India and Protect her Daughters – with regard to it. So far it has garnered over 11,000 signatures. Kaur’s brother Sandeep Singh said they don’t have the means to travel to New York and would want to perform their sister’s last rites properly, reports Times of India . The family also wants Kaur’s two daughters — who stay with their father — to be rescued. "PM Modi gets warm welcome internationally.
