Elephant gets electrocuted during procession in Gujarat's Mehsana; video goes viral

In a weird turn of events, an elephant participating in a procession accidentally got electrocuted while carrying people on its back in Gujarat’s Mehsana. The accident took place during a grand procession of Mahant Kaniram Bapu of the Vadwala temple in Mehsana’s Kasva village. The elephant, who was decorated for the procession, was walking on the roads carrying Mahant Kaniram Bapu along with Mahant Raja Bhuwa on its back. However, things went south when a person mounted on the animal opened an umbrella which got in contact with a live power wire hanging above their head, further causing the animal to get a current shock. Getting anxious over the sudden electric shock, the animal became uncontrollable and started running, causing the people on its back to fall down. Apart from that, the elephant’s caretaker or mahout can be also seen losing his balance while the elephant kept running madly ahead on the road. The people who had gathered to witness the procession also seemed shocked by

Why Kohinoor could now prove to be a lucky diamond

Of all the issues preoccupying the clever minds of Buckingham Palace officials and royal courtiers in London right now, the large and ugly diamond in the Queen Consort’s crown is surely not paramount. But then, if ever a good excuse is needed to divert attention from knottier issues — such as public acceptance of the royal spouse in question — the Kohinoor and its ‘importance’ for India is always handy, given its convoluted history and recall value, pun intended. As if on cue, a BJP spokesman has said wearing the Kohinoor would resurrect “painful memories of India’s colonial past” which has apparent led to renewed concerns in London about whether the crown last worn by King Charles’ grandmother Queen Elizabeth (the previous Queen Consort) would adorn his “darling wife” Camilla at her coronation next May. Is India’s possible ire really a major apprehension or a diversion from more serious issues nearer home? The Kohinoor was worn as a brooch by Queen Victoria after it was ‘presented’

How structural and policy reforms made most populous India better governed than small population West

Westerners, particularly the once mighty and ruling British, used to say, with a complacent and patronising air, that if India realised its potential, someday, it would be unstoppable. Little did the West think that this day could arrive so quickly, just 75 years after an impoverished independence. That is why, even as significant parts of it professes to be allied to India as fellow democracies etc, it often fails to recalibrate its superior tone when speaking to, or about us. After all, it takes a lot of getting used to, when an erstwhile member of the chronically deficient, if talkative, third-world, claims its chair at the high table and starts looking at one in the eye. Hegemony has gone awry in a purportedly liberal Europe and America. Both are a little uncomfortable with the New India, with ingrained White racism that won’t stay down, and hope to subtly retard the rate of India’s progress wherever possible. A junior and dependent partner is acceptable because it conforms to

The bench was led by Chief Justice of India (CJI) UU Lalit, who declined to hear the plea, stating that the petitioner should have approached the court sooner because injuncting now would result in losses due to the upcoming Diwali season. According to Bar and Bench, the court said , “We will not entertain this. Diwali is round the corner and people must have invested in it already and now injuncting this will lead to losses etc. You should have come few months earlier.” BREAKING| #SupremeCourt refuses to entertain a petition seeking to put a blanket ban on #firecrackers . Watch video: Zomato agent dances to garba during work hours, wins hearts

It is always the high spirits and positive attitude towards life that keeps a person going forward in every difficult situation. That being said, as India now indulges in the mood of festivals, there are still some people who don’t have the option to celebrate holidays with their families or get off from their work shifts. A few such people are from food delivery joints where employees are supposed to work even on holidays, especially during festivals. 14 October: Keeping Up with the Kardashians premieres; Martin Luther King Jr. receives Nobel Peace Prize

Exactly a decade ago, on 14 October, when the space shuttle Endeavour rolled into its ultimate resting spot at the California Science Center in Los Angeles, its 123 million-mile journey came to an end. The shuttle had to navigate around trees and street lamps throughout the 12-mile journey from the Los Angeles International Airport to the research centre, which took more than two days. In some situations, the Endeavour’s self-propelled mobile transporter, which could swivel the shuttle 360 degrees, helped the huge white spacecraft weave its way around the obstructions, but in others, dozens of trees were felled and traffic signs were taken down to make room for the shuttle. On the same day in 2007, Keeping Up with the Kardashians , an American reality television show which was based on the personal and professional lives of the Kardashian-Jenner family, made its debut on the E! Cable network. The Kardashian sisters Kim, Kourtney, and Khloé, as well as their half-sisters Kendall and Ky

The Evil in God's Own Country: How Kerala has failed to bring laws against superstition and black magic

The state of Kerala is still reeling from the alleged human sacrifice of two women in Elanthoor, Pathanamthitta. The police, investigating the case, has revealed that the two women — Roselyn and Padmam — had been sacrificed and then their body parts were probably cooked and consumed in a black magic ritual to attain wealth. The three accused, a medic couple who ran an Ayurvedic massage therapy centre and the mastermind of the horrific crime Muhammad Shafi , have been remanded to judicial custody until 26 October. Laila, one of the accused, has reportedly confessed that she and her husband cooked and consumed the flesh of the victims . They were told by Shafi that this would help them “preserve their youth”.
