Rise of Rishi Sunak and emergence of the global Hindu citizen

All the Indian nationalist chest-thumping notwithstanding, Rishi Sunak becoming the Prime Minister of the UK is not about history coming to a full circle or India avenging British colonisation. India has not colonised Britain back (unless we are referring to the complete domination of chicken tikka or malai kofta on the English plate). Nor is Rishi Sunak Indian. He may be of Indian origin and Hindu, but he is more Brit than many Brits. One does not scale the peak of the Tory hierarchy unless one is not just a convincing but a formidable British nationalist. The other Indian-born and Sunak’s home secretary, Suella Braverman, is a Buddhist who wears British colonisation of India proudly on her sleeves. She holds hawkish views against immigration. So, it is facile to assume that their position of power will automatically benefit Indians. But their ascent and success hold insights into other pertinent phenomena, especially in matters of immigration, citizenship, multiculturalism, and ma

Ruchira Kamboj: The diplomat who is helping India reshape the global narrative

Ever since the Russia-Ukraine crisis broke out, the global narrative has centred around Ukraine. It is as if nothing else mattered for the global media and those who set the narrative in international relations. Terrorism in South Asia ceased to matter, countless conflicts in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region faded into irrelevance, Chinese belligerence was no longer treated with disdain, and issues like UNSC reforms got conveniently buried under the carpet. But suddenly comes one diplomat who starts registering these issues on the global radar all over again. Meet Ruchira Kamboj, India’s first woman Permanent Representative to the United Nations. A 1987-batch Indian Foreign Service (IFS) officer, Kamboj is amongst India’s seniormost diplomats. She was handed the role of India’s UN envoy in June this year. As such she succeeded TS Tirumurti in this key role. While Trimurti managed to push back against Western pressure on New Delhi’s Ukraine stand, Kamboj was supposed to b

Off-centre | Hydra-headed communalism: Ending double standards is the only way forward

Communalism is hydra-headed. How else to explain the pervasive double standards that plague us when it comes to calling out so-called “minority” communalism? In Iran and elsewhere, women are protesting against mandatory hijab with cries of aazadi , uncannily resembling our own abortive student protests. But in India, we want not just the “freedom” to wear the hijab, but veil faces too, even within the premises of so-called secular, state-funded institutions where uniform dress codes apply. When Shivalingas, with surfaces defaced, inside wells and wazu-khanas are asked to be carbon-dated, there are objections because communal peace may be disturbed. But the disrespect already meted out to broken icons, religious symbols, and shrines is considered par for the historical course. A conquered people have no or little rights, but why must free and equal citizens of a country not wish to reclaim and restore their desecrated past? We celebrated Bhai Duj, just a couple of days after Diwali o
