Layer'r Shot body spray advertisement slammed for promoting 'rape culture', ASCI pulls up brand

Two advertisements of the body spray brand Layer'r Shot have been slammed on social media for promoting “rape culture”.  The advertisements were first broadcast during the first Test match between England and New Zealand. One of the adverts sees four men having a conversation at a deserted store. The men are debating who will take the “shot” as there are four of them and only “one shot”. As the men discuss the topic, a woman is shown in the ad. She turns back to berate them as she thinks they are conversing about her, but later realises that their talk is centred on the last remaining bottle of the Layer'r perfume. PM Modi integrated J&K, but railways emasculated, says Metro Man E Sreedharan to News18

E Sreedharan, popularly known as India’s “Metro Man", who recently quit active politics stating that he was more of a bureaucrat than a politician, looks at Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s eight-year rule with an analytical eye. While he lauds the PM for initiatives like Swachh Bharat and Atmanirbhar Bharat, the abrogation of Article 370 sections in Jammu and Kashmir, he also expresses his utter disappointment at the way the country’s railway system has been “mishandled”. Hailing from Kerala, the 90-year-old technocrat joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in February 2021 and contested for Kerala’s Palakkad assembly constituency but lost the election. Sreedharan feels that while Modi has delivered in the areas of sanitation, education, housing, water, and electricity facilities, the government has failed in handling the country’s largest locomotive network — the Railways. “He is the best Prime Minister India has had since our Independence,” said Sreedharan to News18. “I will

'Freedom should exist for others as well': S Jaishankar hits out at critics of Russian crude oil purchase

Image
New Delhi: If Europe manages to procure oil and gas from Russia in a way to ensure that the impact on its economy is not traumatic, that freedom should exist for others as well, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar said on Friday. His comments at an interactive session during a conference in the Slovakian capital Bratislava came against the backdrop of mounting Western criticism of India's import of discounted Russian oil. To a question whether India was allowing the “trans-shipment of oil”,.Jaishankar said he had “not even heard about anybody in India thinking along the lines of [buying Russian oil and selling it to somebody else]”. He also criticised Europe for double standards in holding India to account for buying Russian oil, while making exceptions for its own countries that import Russian oil and gas. Pleased to speak at @GLOBSEC 2022 Bratislava Forum. Animated discussion, reflecting a perspective from India and the Indo-Pacific. 📹: https://t.co/lSY1VuJlaW pic.t

What Mohan Bhagwat said about Hindus and Muslims represents consistent stand of RSS

The remarks made by Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh Sarsanghchalak (chief mentor) Mohan Bhagwat on Thursday (2 June 2022) while delivering a lecture in Nagpur have created quite a buzz. The essence of what Sarsanghchalak talked about was how Hindus and Muslims should amicably resolve their issues. What Bhagwat said represents a consistent stand of the RSS and is in continuity with Bhagwat’s remarks made in July 2021 when he had said that the DNA of Hindus and Muslims is same. A strong buzz was created at that time also because of the lack of understanding about the RSS’ consistent stand on national issues. Many perceived it to be something ‘new’ in the RSS’ worldview about Muslims, the same mistake is being repeated post-2 June speech also. It is important to understand here that the RSS considers all religions and their followers to be an integral part of Bharat as a nation. Way back in 1971, the second RSS Sarsanghchalak MS Golwalkar had said in his last interview to Dr Saifuddin Jila

Right Word | Delisting the converted tribals will undo a historical wrong

A silent movement, which one may term as the ‘Tribal Renaissance’, has begun in India. The rallying point of this movement is a demand for delisting of those tribals from the list of Scheduled Tribes who have converted to Christianity and Islam. Primarily, Scheduled Tribes in India have converted to Christianity in India, courtesy of a sustained operation of missionaries in India that had started during the colonial era and still continues with global support. The tribal leaders of India and the community itself have now started resisting not only these conversions but there is a massive pushback from the grassroots level from the tribal community which is demanding that the tribals converted to Islam and Christianity should be delisted from the reservation list. Let us take a look at some numbers which reflect the popular mood among scheduled tribes of the country. An organisation, named  Janjati Suraksha Manch (JSM)  was set up in 2006 to take up the cause of welfare of tribals, es

Maharana Pratap Jayanti 2022: Some little-known facts about the Rajput ruler

Pratap Singh, popularly known as Maharana Pratap, was one of the bravest Rajput rulers of India who ruled Mewar in Rajasthan for 35 years. Those who confuse the premier Indian Administrative Service (IAS), the Indian Foreign Service (IFS), and indeed all the Central Services such as the Indian Police Service (IPS), the Indian Revenue Service (IRS), and so on, with the army of clerks that Thomas Babington Macaulay sought to create in the British Raj are making a mistake. It is true that Macaulay, historian, Whig politician, a former Secretary of War, and a Paymaster General, via his  Minute on Indian Education,  in 1835, was responsible for the introduction of Western Institutional Education in India. But, it had a large number of unintended consequences, even as it led to the creation of an enduring skeletal structure to build our nationhood upon. The original Macaulay-made  sarkari babus  were indeed clerks and not the high and mighty denizens of the Indian Civil Service (ICS), and their successors in the IAS and other allied services. But the current day Indian bureaucracy is also built on a solid foundation of very p

'Monsoon' misery for IMD as rains elude Kerala; Skymet, weather geeks question arrival claim

We Indians keep a close eye on monsoon progress each year, which is very vital for the Indian economy and agriculture perspective. The arrival of seasonal rainfall after harsh summers is welcome with great pomp. As per the national forecasting agency, the rainy season stretches from 1 June to 30 September chronologically. The arrival of monsoon over the Indian mainland starting from Kerala is announced by Indian Meteorological Department, precisely IMD, keeping in mind the set criteria based on various parameters including rainfall, winds and Outgoing Longwave Radiations (OLR). This year, the monsoon arrival was announced by the national agency on 29 May as against the earlier predicted date of 27 May, yet 3 days in advance. But the controversy arose when the country's largest private weather forecaster Skymet India objected to the arrival in view of ignorance of set criteria overlooked by IMD. Many budding  weather enthusiasts and bloggers also supported Skymet as the widespread
