India-US trade deal: Legacy issues, political compulsions, complexity in policies prevent striking of even a 'limited' deal

Image
Talks of an impending trade deal between India and the US had gained ground even before Donald Trump had joined Narendra Modi's bash at Houston on 24 September. The POTUS then fanned the flames during his speech at 'Howdy, Modi!' event, telling the crowd of 50,000 Indian Americans and the larger audience beyond that a trade deal is going to happen "very soon". There were murmurs that Modi could sign on the dotted line on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly. The bilateral between the two leaders further fueled the expectation. All hopes and expectations were eventually belied. While the teams led by Union Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal and US Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer carried on with their "intense negotiations", a deal or "package" of any sort remained elusive even as the US managed to ink an "interim deal on tariffs and digital economy" with Japan on the sidelines of UNGA. Analysts say US

"Since I came back from Pakistan, I have been continuously harassed in the Army and I am being looked at with suspicion, that is why I decided to quit," he said. Chavan has sent his resignation letter to his unit commander in Ahmednagar, sources close to him said. "Basically the high court has decided and ruled yesterday that it is not a forest," Javadekar told reporters in Lucknow. "You can't fell anything that is forest." The Union minister's comments came after the Mumbai Metro Corporation began cutting trees in Aarey Colony, a major green lung of the metropolis, for a proposed car shed. File image of Union minister Prakash Javadekar. PTI Environment activists have put up a stiff resistance to the move, but police on Saturday imposed section 144 of the Criminal Procedure Code in the area, banning unlawful assembly and arrested 29 people in connection with the protest against the felling of trees. New Delhi: Seventy-one retired bureaucrats on Friday wrote to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, expressing concern over the prosecution of four former officials of the finance ministry in the INX media case and asserted that such action will demotivate diligent and honest officers from taking important decisions. File photo of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. PTI They demanded that there should be a reasonable period of time after which files should not be reopened. The letter has been signed by retired civil servants like former cabinet secretary KM Chandrasekhar, former foreign secretary and national security advisor Shivshankar Menon, former foreign secretary Sujatha Singh and former DGP of Punjab Julio Riberio. From offering 50,000 jobs to launching DBT scheme for apple growers, Centre's detailed outreach plans for Kashmiris

The Narendra Modi government is looking to 'engage' Kashmiris through a number of outreach programmes, apparently to blunt the psychological blow that sudden revocation of Article 370 dealt to the residents of the Valley. From economic packages to Indian Army's hiring bid, from scholarships to students to the prime minister himself stoutly defending the scrapping of state's special status as a historic step, the Centre has been employing a multi-pronged approach to encourage Kashmir residents to wholly integrate with India. As Delhi govt's doorstep services scheme turns 1, a look at a father's 8-year battle for son's disability certificate

Image
For eight years, Karyanand Mishra — a resident of Dallupura, East Delhi — had been running from the proverbial pillar to post, trying to secure a Disability Certificate for his son Aman. Aman, now 15, was diagnosed with the movement disorder cerebral palsy in early childhood. A Class 10 student, Aman will appear for the Board exams in a few months. At the Sarvodaya Rajakiya Bal Vidyalay in Dallupura, where he is enrolled, Aman is counted among the promising students. Karyanand carries his son to school on his shoulders every morning. Aman’s passed in every class so far, fighting to stay abreast of his peers — and often succeeding. But as he faces the Board exams, without the Disability Certificate that would have offered him support like an additional 20 minutes per hour to complete a paper and a Rs 2,500 monthly grant, Aman’s parents are justifiably worried. Cerebral palsy is among the conditions included under the Persons with Disabilities Act. And Aman’s is a visible disability.

Chhattisgarh security forces recover IED targeting police station from Sukma district; explosive defused

Sukma: Security forces in Chhattisgarh on Saturday thwarted a possible Naxal attack when they recovered a powerful Improvised Explosive Device (IED) planted along the main road in Sukma district, police said. This route that goes through dense forests connects Sukma town to Hyderabad (Telangana). The explosive was immediately defused by the bomb disposal squad, he said. Maoists planted explosives close to trees and wells to target security personnel, as they often take shelter under trees and use the water resources during their long search operations in jungles, the official explained. from Firstpost India Latest News https://ift.tt/2LPfxSs Press Trust of India
