India records 14,264 new COVID-19 cases; daily figure registers rise for fourth straight day

New Delhi: Daily COVID-19 cases in India registered an increase for the fourth consecutive day with the country recording 14,264 new cases, taking the total tally to 1,09,91,651, according to Union health ministry data updated on Sunday. The death toll increased to 1,56,302 with 90 daily new fatalities, the data updated at 8 am showed. The country had registered 18,855 infections in a day on January 29. The number of people who have recuperated from the disease surged to 1,06,89,715, which translates to a national COVID-19 recovery rate of 97.25 percent and the case fatality rate stands at 1.42 percent. The COVID-19 active caseload remained below 1.5 lakh. There are 1,45,634 active cases of coronavirus infections in the country which comprises 1.32 percent of the total caseload, the data stated. Uttarakhand disaster: Toll rises to 67 as two more bodies recovered from Tapovan project site

Gopeshwar: Two more bodies were recovered from the flood-ravaged Tapovan-Vishnugad hydel project site, taking the toll in the calamity in Uttarakhand to 67 even as search operations continued there for the 15th day on Sunday. Three bodies had been recovered from the desilting tank near the Tapovan project barrage by Saturday evening while two more were extricated late at night, district administration officials said. Search operations at the project site have been underway on a war footing for a fortnight since it bore the brunt of an avalanche triggered by a glacier burst over Rishi Ganga in Chamoli district on 7 February. The 13.2 mw Rishi Ganga hydel project was totally demolished in the avalanche while the Tapovan-Vishnugad hydel project suffered extensive damage. Mathura court admits two suits seeking removal of mosque from near Lord Krishna temple

Mathura: A court on Saturday admitted two suits seeking the shifting of a 17th century mosque away from a temple which the devouts believe marks the birthplace of Lord Krishna, according to a district government counsel. Civil Judge Senior Division Neha Banaudia admitted the suits and fixed 10 March as the date of the next hearing. District Government Counsel Counsel Sanjai Gaur said one of the suits was filed by Advocate Shailendra Singh and four others. They sought the shifting of the Shahi Idgah mosque, which is claimed to have been built at the birthplace of Lord Krishna, within the 13.37-acre premises of the Katra Keshav Dev temple. Centre released Rs 1 lakh crore GST compensation to states since Oct 2020, says Finance Ministry

New Delhi: The Centre has released Rs 1 lakh crore to states and UTs in four months since October 2020, to meet GST compensation shortfall, the Finance Ministry said on Saturday. The ministry on Friday released the 17th weekly instalment of Rs 5,000 crore to 23 states and 3 Union Territories (Delhi, Jammu and Kashmir and Puducherry), taking the total amount released so far under the special borrowing window set up in October last year to Rs 1 lakh crore. The remaining five states, Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur, Mizoram, Nagaland and Sikkim, do not have a gap in revenue on account of Goods and Services Tax (GST) implementation. The Centre had set up a special borrowing window in October 2020 to meet the estimated shortfall of Rs 1.10 lakh crore in revenue arising on account of implementation of GST. India and China hold 10th round of military talks days after withdrawal of troops in eastern Ladakh

New Delhi:  India and China on Saturday held another round of military talks with a focus on taking forward the disengagement process in Hot Springs, Gogra and Depsang in eastern Ladakh and bring down the tensions in the region, official sources said. The 10th round of Corps Commander-level talks are taking place two days after the Chinese and Indian militaries completed the withdrawal of troops, weapons and other military hardware from the North and South banks of Pangong lake areas as part of an agreement. The meeting started at 10 am at the Moldo border point on the Chinese side of the Line of Actual Control and it was continuing, the sources said. They said India will insist on a faster disengagement process in remaining areas like Hot Springs, Gogra and Depsang to bring down tension in the region that has witnessed a tense standoff between the two militaries for over nine months. Petrol price reaches all-time high of Rs 97 per litre in Mumbai, diesel crosses Rs 88-mark

New Delhi: Petrol price on Saturday touched an all-time high of Rs 97 per litre in Mumbai while, diesel rate crossed Rs 88-mark. Petrol price was hiked by record 39 paise per litre and diesel by 37 paise a litre, according to a price notification of state-owned fuel retailers. This the 12th straight day of price hike and the largest daily increase since oil companies started to revise rates on a daily basis. The increase pushed the petrol price to Rs 90.58 a litre in Delhi and to Rs 97 in Mumbai. Diesel now comes for Rs 80.97 a litre in the National Capital and for Rs 88.06 in Mumbai. The increase follows a spurt in oil prices in the international market, on which India is dependent to meet its 85 percent of the needs. New Delhi:  Kerala, Maharashtra, Punjab, Chhattisgarh and Madhya Pradesh have recorded an "upsurge" in daily new cases of COVID-19 , the Union Health Ministry said on Saturday. In a statement, the ministry said in the last seven days, Chhattisgarh has also seen a rise in daily active new cases. In the last 24 hours, 259 daily new cases have been reported, it said. Kerala continues to report a high number of daily new cases and in the past week, Maharashtra has exhibited a spike in the number of daily new cases, accounting for the highest number of daily new cases in the country on Saturday, the ministry said in the statement. "In the last 24 hours, 6,112 daily new cases have been reported in the state," it said. One more body has been recovered from a flood-hit area in Uttarakhand's Chamoli district, taking the toll in the glacial disaster to 62, even as search and rescue operations continued for the 13th day at the NTPC's Tapovan-Vishnugad hydel project site. One body was recovered late Thursday night from the banks of the Alaknanda at Helang between Joshimath and Pipalkoti, Chamoli district police said on Friday. The body was found at a coffer barrage of the THDC, it said. With this recovery, the toll in the 7 February disaster has risen to 62 while 142 people are still missing, they said. The Maharashtra government has imposed restrictions in several districts to curb a rise in the COVID-19 cases this week. The Bihar School Examination Board (BSEB) cancelled the Class 10 Social Science exam after its first session on Friday, 19 February. The board had to cancel the board exam paper after it was verified that the Social Science paper was leaked before the exam in Jamui district. According to media reports, the exam is now set to be conducted again on 8 March, 2021. Kolkata: BJP youth wing leader Pamela Goswami was on Friday arrested with cocaine worth lakhs of rupees from south Kolkata's upscale New Alipore area, police said. Ranchi: The Jharkhand High Court Friday rejected Lalu Prasad Yadav's bail application in a fodder scam case, dashing the RJD president's chance of immediate release from jail. Justice Aparesh Kumar Singh turned down Yadav's bail request in the Dumka treasury case, an offshoot of the multi-crore rupees fodder scam. The court said since the RJD supremo has to serve two more months in jail to complete half of the tenure of his total sentence in the case, the bail plea is not granted and asked him to file a fresh application after two months. Mumbai's air quality is reportedly taking a huge dip, and the amount of coal being used in industrial sectors is the most significant contributor.
