“We have had to beg for food”: Dholak makers in Lucknow fail to hit a profitable note

When you step into Mehboob Ali's house, you can't help but feel the dejection. The floor of his house is crooked, the paint of the walls peel at the slightest touch, the doors are damaged, which had been replaced after taking a loan from a neighbour. His house can come crashing down and his please for repairs have fallen on deaf ears. Mehboob Ali and his family, who live in a government colony in Vasant Kunj near Dubagga in Lucknow, make and sell dholaks for a living. Like Mehboob Ali there are many families who make dholaks, there are others who make sil-battas (grinding stones), mops, and some even sell carpets. The Coronavirus pandemic and the ensuing lockdown have brought Ali’s life to a grinding halt. “We sold dholaks all across Lucknow and to the neighbouring towns such as Kanpur, Jhansi, Katibagiya and many more. How will we survive if we can’t travel and sell dholaks?” says Raunak Ali, Mehboob’s son. The art of making dholaks has been passed down for generations in

Cheque rules change: High value cheques to bounce if you don’t inform bank, details here

With the ever-increasing cases of bank fraud in the country, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) had introduced the Positive Pay System in January of 2021. It was essentially rolled out as a tool designed to detect fraudulent activity. This is done by matching specific information related to the cheque that is issued by you, the issuer, for clearing. As per the new rule, customers who are looking to issue cheques will have to inform their respective banks about the cheque details via net/mobile banking or a physical visit to the branch. If the issuer fails to inform the bank prior to the cheque being issued, then the cheques will bounce. This could prove a hurdle for senior citizens or people who are unfamiliar with online/net banking. Alternatively, some banks also offer their customers the facility to inform about the cheque via SMS, ATM or even email. The information that needs to be verified includes such things as the cheque number, cheque date, payee name, account number, the amount

Watch: Kerala police tries to reconstruct woman’s murder using cobra and dummy

Kerala police used a real snake and a dummy to reconstruct the crime scene of the 2020 Uthra murder case. The video of the demonstration, which was carried out last year, was released to the media on 26 August. It is supposed to be crucial to the investigation. Twenty-five-year-old Uthra was allegedly murdered by her husband in May last year. The husband gave her sleeping pills before planting an India cobra to bite and kill her. Police had arrested the husband last year on suspicion of murder. It was alleged that this was the second time he had tried to kill her using a snake. According to the investigation team, the husband had earlier used a viper to kill Uthra. She survived the attempt and was recovering at her parents’ house when she was bitten by the cobra. Police have stated that deliberately using a snake twice to kill a person amounts to "brutal murder". The video released by the police shows a cobra being released near the dummy. 'Dismantling Global Hindutva': The malefic rakshasas and their demonic agenda

Firstpost is convinced that Dismantling Global Hindutva (DGH), a three-day online conference (from Sept 10-12) planned by anonymous organisers in the US, is a partisan and politically-motivated event designed to malign an ancient religion and its adherents. Through columns and reported pieces, this Firstpost series exposes why such programmes are misleading, agenda-driven, and nothing but thinly-veiled Hinduphobia. *** Good Hindus, concerned journalists and academics have already weighed in, here, here and here, for example, on the so-called conference titled "Dismantling Global Hindutva", and what the event and its provocateur-instigators' agenda portends. Advocacy organisations such as the Hindu American Foundation have demanded of universities and colleges, whose support the conference organisers have claimed, to answer for their involvement in this demonising - if not genocidal - project of painting Hindus into a corner and suffocating them.
