India’s terrible roads: How to build a world-class network and still reach net zero

Image
One of the keys to China’s economic renaissance over the past couple of decades is often overlooked. Namely, it has built a lot of roads. China’s highways have more or less tripled from around 50,000km in 2000 to around 160,000km by the end of 2020. This means that in just two decades, China has added highways that are 20% longer than the entire US interstate highway system, and these make up about 40 percent of all roads in the country. India, too, has tripled its highways over the same duration, but the network is far less impressive . They are lower quality, narrower, less well maintained and only make up a very small part of the total system of roads in the country. This is arguably one of the reasons why its economy has substantially underperformed China’s over the past 20 years: China’s GDP grew 12-fold to be worth US$14.7 trillion (£10.8 trillion) by 2020, while India’s grew six-fold to be worth US$2.6 trillion over the same period. China vs India GDP growth (2000-2020)

Opinion | Kangana Ranaut no expert on history, but actor par excellence; calls to revoke Padma bogus

Actor Kangana Ranaut, who was being celebrated until recently for speaking out against nepotism in Bollywood, is now being asked to pay the price for being unabashedly articulate. Her remarks claiming that India became Independent in 2014, and not in 1947, have angered politicians across parties including the Indian National Congress, Bharatiya Janata Party, Aam Aadmi Party, Nationalist Congress Party, Hindustani Awam Morcha, and Shiv Sena. Ranaut has been an open admirer of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, so it is not surprising that she credits him for playing a key role in shaping India’s destiny since 2014, the year that Modi’s party came to power. However, erasing the history of India’s struggle for freedom from British rule to elevate Modi seems excessive. Varun Gandhi and Praveen Shankar Kapoor from the Bharatiya Janata Party are among those who have criticized Ranaut. There is a growing number of voices urging President Ram Nath Kovind to take back the Padma Shri Award that was

In PM Modi's meet on cryptocurrency, concerns raised over money laundering and terror financing risks

Amid concerns over misleading claims of huge returns on cryptocurrency investment, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday chaired a meeting on the way forward on the issue, with government sources asserting that such unregulated markets cannot be allowed to become avenues for "money laundering and terror financing". The meeting comes only a few days after RBI governor Shaktikanta Das said: “Cryptocurrencies are a serious concern to RBI from a macroeconomic and financial stability standpoint. The government is actively looking at the issue and will decide on it. But as the central banker, we have serious concerns about it and we have flagged it many times." The meet In Saturday's meet, it was strongly felt that attempts to mislead the youth through over-promising and non-transparent advertising should be stopped, the sources said, signalling that strong regulatory steps are in the offing. Earlier, the government had held off on plans to introduce The Cryptocurr

Children's Day 2021: Messages and greetings to share on Jawaharlal Nehru's birth anniversary

To commemorate the birth anniversary of India’s first Prime Minister, Jawaharlal Nehru, Children's Day is celebrated every year on 14 November. The special day stresses on the need and importance of nurturing and educating the young generation. The occasion is marked as Children's Day as Nehru was very fond of kids who used to call him 'Chacha Nehru'. Also known as Bal Diwas, Children's Day is marked as a reminder that the young generations are the future and real strength of the country. After Nehru's death in 1964 , the nation started observing Children's Day on 14 November. Before that, India used to mark this day on 20 November, the same date when Children's Day is celebrated globally by the United Nations. No grand celebrations will take place this time due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. However, every year, Children's Day is celebrated widely in educational institutions and schools. On this day, special guests are also invited in order to

Happy Children's Day 2021: Motivational quotes by Jawaharlal Nehru on his birth anniversary

Children's Day marks the birth anniversary of India's first Prime Minister, Jawaharlal Nehru, and is celebrated on 14 November every year. On this day, people across the country recall Nehru's teachings and pay their respects to the leader who was very fond of kids. He was fondly called 'Chacha Nehru' by children. Children's Day is of great relevance as it stresses on the importance of educating the young generation, the future of the country. Before Nehru's death, India used to celebrate Children's Day on 20 November along with other countries, including the United Nations. However, after he passed away in 1964 , the nation started celebrating this occasion on 14 November. On this day, schools, colleges, and other educational institutions organise cultural events, speeches, and debates every year. However, due to the ongoing coronavirus crisis, no grand events will be held this year. This day also aims at raising awareness about various issues related

Rs 2 lakh for R-Day violence accused: Congress is welcome to self-destruct, but has no right to destroy the nation

The news about the Punjab government announcing Rs 2 lakh each to 83 people who were arrested by the Delhi Police for violence on the Republic day this year has stunned me. Can a state government that is on oath to defend the Indian Constitution, support criminals who try to attack the sanctity of the very Constitution? Dividing society in the name of religion, caste, etc, is not new. But this is a new low in Indian politics. The Congress seems to have forgotten that Punjabis, Congress and the nation as a whole have paid a huge price for this kind of opportunist, cynical politics in the 1980s and the 1990s. Competition between the Akalis and the Congress had led to a violent separatist movement in India that claimed thousands of lives. Indira Gandhi had created Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale to fight and divide the Akalis. The Akalis, in turn, hoped to exploit him for their own political ends and decided to ride the proverbial tiger. I have written about it in my forthcoming book about

'Josh Machine' Col Viplav Tripathi's death an irreparable loss for Assam Rifles, killing of family adds to shock

Fine officer, "josh machine", thorough gentleman, never angry. These impressions will forever be etched in the memory of those who worked with Colonel Viplav Tripathi and even those like me who met him briefly. I met Colonel Tripathi during an assignment in Mizoram earlier this year. Commanding Officer of the 46 Assam Rifles, he was always smiling and ever helpful, getting us everything we needed to do our story. Whether it was data on illegal smuggling along Mizoram-Myanmar border or the training manual for women personnel of the Assam Rifles, Colonel Tripathi had all the information on his fingertips, and relayed it effortlessly. The Colonel's death in a militant ambush in Manipur's Sehkan village comes as a huge blow to both the Assam Rifles and the Indian Army. The attack, suspected to have been carried out by militants from the separatist group People's Liberation Army or the People's Revolutionary Party of Kangleipak (PREPAK), also claimed the lives of

Delhi’s air pollution is a perennial problem; singling out Diwali firecrackers and stubble burning won’t help much

Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal is not honest when he claims that the city’s air is good throughout the year and it only gets bad in the month of November, conveniently attributing it to stubble burning in the neighbouring states. First ‘good’ air day of 2021 was on 19 October, post heavy rainfall in the region, with an Air Quality Index average of 46. Also, it is important to note that since the Central Pollution Control Board started measuring Delhi’s AQI in 2015, the city has not had a single good air day in 2015, 2016 and 2018, while 2017 and 2019 had two ‘good air’ days. You will be surprised to know that despite the lockdown in 2020, we only had five ‘good air’ days in Delhi. So far, in last six years, Delhi has had just 10 ‘good air’ days. So, Delhi’s air pollution crisis is perennial and not seasonal. It’s, therefore, important to understand what makes Delhi the most toxic capital in the world. And mind you, we are only discussing air, not water, as Yamuna continues to

Supreme Court suggests two-day lockdown in Delhi as capital battles 'severe' air quality levels

The Supreme Court on Saturday suggested the Centre impose a two-day lockdown to tackle air pollution in the National Capital. A Bench of Chief Justice of India NV Ramana, Justices DY Chandrachud and Surya Kant said, "Tell us how we can reduce AQI from 500 at least by 200 points. Take some urgent measures. The Court asked the Centre to take an emergency decision. "We will look at a long term solution later," the court added. The Supreme Court told the Centre during a hearing on plea on air pollution in Delhi — little children have to go to school in this weather, we are exposing them to this. How India has contained terrorism in Kashmir but normalised the separatist ideology

Jammu and Kashmir has slipped into a state of uncertainty and ominous disquietude due to the unabated killings of civilians (including the minuscule minorities ) and attack on security force personnel by the Islamist terrorists. Pakistan-sponsored violence, which is always aimed at destabilising India’s northern region, is occurring at two fronts — within the Kashmir Valley and near the Line of Control (LoC). This comes at a time when India and China have been locked in a standoff for more than a year on the Line of Actual Control (LAC) in Ladakh. The latest additions to the killings were Touseef Ahmad Wani — a J&K police constable — on 7 November 2021 and Mohammad Ibrahim Khan — a Kashmiri Muslim who worked as a salesman at a store owned by Kashmiri Pandit businessman Dr Sandeep Mawa — on 8 November. Previously, in October, nine soldiers of the Indian Army were killed by terrorists in Poonch and Rajouri districts, near the LoC, in Jammu division. Deep-seated separatism in Kashm
