Tesla in India: Elon Musk’s EV company plans to set up battery storage factory in the country

Tesla, under the leadership of Elon Musk, is reportedly in the process of formulating plans to manufacture and sell battery storage systems in India. According to reports, the company has submitted a proposal seeking incentives to establish a factory in the country. As per Reuters, Tesla’s proposal revolves around bolstering India’s battery storage capabilities through its ‘Powerwall’ system. This system is designed to store electricity generated from sources like solar panels or grids for later use, particularly during nighttime or periods of power shortages. Tesla has also requested various incentives for the establishment of its battery storage facility. However, Indian officials have informed the company that these incentives might not be granted. Instead, the government has expressed its willingness to foster a fair business model by offering subsidies to consumers purchasing such products. The Indian government is currently reviewing Tesla’s proposal, which marks another sign

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau urges India to cooperate in murder probe, declines to release evidence

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau stated on Thursday that Canada will not make its evidence public and urged India to assist in an inquiry into the killing of a Sikh separatist leader in British Columbia. Trudeau stated on Monday that Ottawa had credible allegations that Indian government agents were involved in the June murder of Hardeep Singh Nijjar, drawing a strong response from New Delhi. Nijjar, 45, was a citizen of Canada. According to CBC News, which cited sources, the Canadian government has gathered both human and signals information in a months-long probe into the death of the Sikh separatist leader. So far, traditional Canadian allies have adopted a cautious approach to the situation. Political observers believe this is due in part to the United States and other key powers viewing India as a counterbalance to China’s expanding influence. “There is no question that India is a country of growing importance and a country that we need to continue to work with … and we’

Rajya Sabha passes Women's Reservation Bill with unanimous decision

After an 11-hour debate, the Rajya Sabha unanimously approved the women’s reservation bill on Thursday. After the Lok Sabha approved the bill on Wednesday, the Opposition questioned the fact that the 33% female quota in the Lok Sabha and state legislatures will not take effect until after the census and redistricting. Only two AIMIM MPs opposed the bill in the Lok Sabha. During the Rajya Sabha’s vote on the Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam bill, there was no one who chose to abstain. The new Parliament building’s first bill to be passed is this one. Rajya Sabha chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar praised the MPs and referred to the Upper House’s approval of the bill as a historic accomplishment. “Historic achievement, congratulations. It is also a coincidence that today is PM Modi’s birthday by Hindu calendar,” Dhankhar said. Prior to the vote, PM Modi discussed the measure in the Rajya Sabha and claimed that it would inspire newfound confidence in the nation’s citizens. After the bill passed

Women’s Reservation Bill implementation depends on delimitation. What is it?

Image
After hours and hours of debate on Wednesday (20 September), the Lok Sabha passed The Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam — The Constitution (One Hundred and Twenty-Sixth Amendment) Bill, 2023 – which reserves 33 per cent quota for women in Lok Sabha and state/UT legislative Assemblies. At the final count, the lower house had passed the women’s reservation bill with 454 members voting in favour and two against it. Prime Minister Narendra Modi was present during the voting on the bill, which was the first to be passed in the new Parliament building . Today (21 September), the bill is likely to pass the Rajya Sabha hurdle and become a law after the President’s assent. However, don’t expect to see changes in the Assemblies or Parliament immediately. The 33 per cent quota, in fact, won’t come into play at least until 2029 . Why? This is because reservation has been made contingent on the delimitation exercise. The new bill , introduced by the BJP-led Centre, has inserted one article – 334A – w

BJP slams Sonia Gandhi for taking credit for Women's Reservation Bill, says should rise above party politics

The BJP on Wednesday slammed the Congress Parliamentary Party Chairperson Sonia Gandhi for taking credit for the Women’s Reservation Bill, saying that in her opening remarks on the Bill in the Lok Sabha, Gandhi didn’t mention the women at the forefront to raise their voice for the Bill – Bengal’s Geeta Mukherjee and BJP’s Sushma Swaraj – and asked her to rise above politics as she was the voice of the Opposition.     Addressing the Lok Sabha, BJP MP Nishikant Dubey said, “When Sonia Gandhi was speaking, I thought she will speak rising above politics because she is the voice of opposition. The women who were at the forefront to raise their voice for this Bill, she was Bengal’s Geeta Mukherjee and BJP’s Sushma Swaraj. Had they not been there, we would not be seeing this reservation. But, Sonia Gandhi didn’t mention either of them. What kind of politics is this? Women’s Reservation Bill: Why 33% quotas for women won’t be a reality until 2029

Twenty seven years after it was first introduced in Parliament, 10 years after it was passed by the Rajya Sabha and nine years into the Narendra Modi government, the Centre led by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) introduced the Women’s Reservation Bill in the Lok Sabha on Tuesday (19 September). Shortly after MPs moved into the new Parliament building from the old one – now called Samvidhan Sadan – did Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal stand up and introduce the bill, named as Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam that proposes 33 per cent reservations for women in the Lok Sabha and state Assemblies. The move came after Prime Minister Narendra Modi urged MPs to forget all past bitterness and start a new chapter. Speaking in the new Lok Sabha, he said: “Discussion on Women’s Reservation Bill happened for a long time. During Atal Bihari Vajpayee’s regime Women’s Reservation Bill was introduced several times but there was not enough majority to pass the Bill, and because of this this dream remain

Aditya-L1 Update: ISRO performs vital manoeuvre, slingshots solar observatory to Lagrange Pt. 1

The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) has achieved a significant milestone with the successful execution of the Trans-Lagrangian Point 1 Insertion (TL1I) maneuver at approximately 2 am. This manoeuvre marks the initiation of the Aditya-L1 spacecraft’s 110-day journey towards the L1 point, situated along the Sun-Earth line. Why is Women’s Reservation Bill back in focus? Why has it been hanging for 27 years?

Image
There’s a big buzz in the political corridors. It appears that this special session of Parliament will be indeed be special for two reasons. One, the move of the MPs from the old Parliament building to the new one – which will happen today (19 September) – and secondly, because it seems that the Centre cleared the Women’s Reservation bill in the Union Cabinet meeting held on Monday and is set to bring it for passage in the Parliament on Wednesday (20 September). At the Cabinet meet that took place on Monday and lasted for more than 90 minutes, speculation is rife that it approved the Women’s Reservation Bill , which guarantees a 33 per cent quota in Lok Sabha and state Assemblies. The news of the Cabinet clearing this long-pending bill came after Minister of State Prahlad Singh Patel posted on social media platform X that the the Cabinet had approved it, but deleted the post within an hour. “Only the Modi government had the moral courage to fulfil the demand for women’s reservation

Special session of Parliament begins today: Will the government pull off a surprise?

Image
We are hours away from the special session of Parliament, which will begin today and run for the next five days, until 22 September. The session, called by the Centre, has created much buzz concerning the agenda and the purpose of the sitting. While the government has listed a discussion on the 75-year journey of the Indian Parliament – since the first time it met in December 1946 – and passage of other bills, the Opposition suspects that the Modi sarkar will throw a surprise, with Congress leader Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury saying, “Only the government knows what its intention is. It may surprise everyone with some new agenda.” Incidentally, this is only the second special session of Parliament during the Modi government’s tenure. The last one was held in June 2017 at midnight to mark the rollout of the Goods and Services Tax in a largely ceremonial session that had no other legislative business. From the legislative business to changing of venue – the session will shift to the new Parl
