American-Australian prof’s handle displaying Musk’s name spooks Twitterati, sends out tweets in Hindi

New Delhi: A Twitter handle going by the name of @iawoolford has whipped up a storm on the internet after the owner changed his name to Elon Musk and believe it or not began tweeting in Hindi. Barely a day after Elon Musk’s Twitter announced mass lay-offs among the India-based marketing and communications teams, Twitterati were left stunned and could not believe that the new owner of Twitter was now tweeting in Hindi. Turns out that the handle belongs to an American-Australian Hindi professor, Ian Woolford, who is part of the faculty at La Trobe University in Melbourne. With the original Elon Musk’s hostile takeover of the micro-blogging platform dominating the headlines recently, when Woolford changed his Twitter name to “Elon Musk” and began putting out hilarious tweets posing as a ‘Twitter Complaint Hotline Operator’, netizens could not believe what they saw. The Professor’s twitter handle even displayed an identical bio and profile picture, resembling Musk. He, however, left hi

Perils of pollution: It’s time we stopped taking clean air for granted

Let us begin by acknowledging the gravity of the problem. We have not managed to personalise the issue of the deteriorating quality of air or given it due importance. Clean air is taken for granted by most people. Stats don’t lie The World Health Organization (WHO), in collaboration with BreatheLife, has developed an online indicator to assess the quality of the air we live in by measuring PM2.5 — fine particulate matter whose higher amounts in the air suggest serious health hazards and deaths. According to this indicator, all regions of Delhi-NCR are exposed to five times higher amounts of PM2.5 than the stipulated safe level. Nearly all of the global population (99 per cent) lives in places where air pollution levels exceed WHO guideline limits. Despite the said statistics and hard facts, the problem continues and challenges all stakeholders of clean air to take cognisance of the magnitude and nature of the issue. Time has come for us to take the responsibility to determine where

Right Word | Uniform Civil Code: Muslim members, Ambedkar and other stalwarts who supported it in Constituent Assembly

The debate on having a Uniform Civil Code (UCC) in India has been reignited of late as the Gujarat government has expressed its intention to implement it. Earlier, the Uttarakhand government had also expressed the same intention. Further, in an affidavit filed on the issue of implementation of the UCC in October 2022, the Central government has also said: “This provision is provided to effect integration of India by bringing communities on the common platform on matters which are at present governed by diverse personal laws. This Article [44] is based on the concept that in matters of inheritance, right to property, maintenance and succession, there will be a common law. Article 44 divests religion from social relations and personal law.” The affidavit further said, “Citizens belonging to different religions and denominations follow different property and matrimonial laws, which is an affront to the nation’s unity.” The matter is now likely to be referred to the 22 nd Law Commission.

Aircalypse: From stunted growth in kids to obesity in adults, from diabetes to cancer, pollution bringing it all on

New Delhi : With Air Quality in the national capital continuing to remain in the ‘severe’ category for two consecutive days, people have been complaining of various respiratory issues. Air pollution has adverse effects on our bodies which can be short-term as well as long-term. According to the Chairman Institute of Chest Surgery and Lung Transplantation Medanta, Dr Arvind, air pollution can affect different organs of the human body. Air pollution can affect cognitive development in children. “Research suggests children exposed to polluted air may not attain normal IQ levels. However, in older people, the chances of having a stroke increase 5 to 10 times if they are exposed to polluted air,” said Dr Arvind. Studies have found pre-mature hypertension and high blood pressure in teenagers who are exposed to polluted air. There has also been a significant increase in heart attacks among young adults and air pollution can be one of the leading cause. Dr Arvind also said that the lungs g

Severe air pollution threatens to knock wind out of COVID-19 victims

Don’t venture out, use air purifiers, work from home, or else go away from Delhi-NCR: this is the advice doctors are giving to those who have suffered a bout of moderate to severe Covid-19 disease in the last two years. As the air quality around Delhi-NCR has fallen to the severe category, with the air quality index or AQI shooting up to 600 in parts of the capital, people who suffered moderate or severe Covid are bearing the brunt of the weather much more than healthy individuals. From fluctuating oxygen saturation (SpO2) to complications in the lungs, uncontrollable bouts of cough, asthma attacks, and even chances of lung failure – these patients are either suffering or are likely to suffer multiple health issues with worsening air quality. With no relief in sight, patients who had suffered from Covid infection that required steroids, oxygen, and hospitalisation – or those who had prolonged or delayed recovery – should take special care during these days. According to Dr Ravi She

Tamil Nadu: Headmaster 'instigates' schoolgirls to file 'fake' sexual harassment complaint against teacher, booked

Madurai (Tamil Nadu): Headmaster of a government school here was booked under Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act for allegedly engaging two students in filing a sexual harassment complaint against a male teacher as a ‘revenge’. The incident came to light when police investigated the complaint registered against the male teacher in which two female teachers were also named only to realise the allegations were ‘fabricated’ and the complaint was made to settle personal score with the teachers, officials said on Thursday. As per cops, the headmaster had called 1098 (Childline) on August 6 to inform about the complaints from the girls against the physical education teacher placed in the school’s complaint box. Subsequently, the Child Welfare Committee members inquired about the incident and lodged a complaint with the Oomachikulam all women police station, as a first step. Where, a POCSO case was registered against the 3 teachers at the Karupayurani Police Station o

In Punjab’s paddy fields: Where the seeders are happy but the farmers are not

Image
Independent agri-policy analyst Indra Shekhar Singh travelled through Punjab’s stubble-burning hell last year. Things haven’t changed; they’ve only got worse this time around. Here’s the report that Firstpost ran last year: Evening was coming on; a yellow full moon hung over the Patiala road as a cool breeze swept across the land. All day we had been flanked by green paddy fields, ready for harvest. But things were about to change. As the darkness descended, we saw at a distance, pyre-like fires. We sped up only to discover that the fires extended across swathes of open land, a landscape that was an open oven billowing twisted columns of smoke. This was it, the parali zone, and the flames we were looking at were at least a big part of the reason for the winter season’s extreme pollution in north India. Carefully, I walked into the burning remains of one harvested paddy crop, hoping to find the farmer who had done this. There was nobody home; the smoke doesn’t agree with most people

L’affaire Coimbatore blasts: In search of dangerous jihadi links

For a nation that has been one of the most terror afflicted in the world, it is baffling that there should be so much speculation about the Coimbatore car blast of 23 October 2022 which killed one Jamesha Mubin. It is plain providence that the explosion did not take place as was planned, and had the suicide attack gone off as it was expected to be perpetrated them scores of people including devotees flocking the Kottai Eswaran temple would have fallen prey to the sinister design. Indeed, the manner in which the car was loaded with explosives — three steel drums bearing potassium nitrate, aluminium powder, sulphur, charcoal, nails and ball bearings — the blast could have created grave damage to the temple and the market place in front of which the incident took place. However, what is not baffling is the manner in which the authorities are reacting to the latest incident of Islamist terror attack. Insouciance has become a norm with the state apparatus, and this time around it took a fo
