COVID-19 sub-strain JN.1 found in Kerala woman

A case of COVID-19 sub-variant JN.1 was detected in Kerala on December 8, official sources said on Saturday. The sample from a 79-year-old woman had returned a positive result in an RT-PCR test on November 18, they said, adding that she had mild symptoms of influenza-like illnesses (ILI) and had recovered from COVID-19. More than 90 per cent of the COVID-19 cases in India at present are mild and they are in home isolation, the sources said. Earlier, an Indian traveller was also detected with JN.1 sub-variant in Singapore. The person was a native of Tamil Nadu’s Tiruchirapalli district and had travelled to Singapore on October 25. No increase in cases was observed in Tiruchirapalli district or other places in Tamil Nadu following the strain being detected in them. “No other case of JN.1 variant has been detected in India,” the source said. The JN.1 sub-variant — first identified in Luxembourg and since spreading to several countries — is a descendant of the Pirola variant (BA.2.86).

The alleged mastermind behind the Parliament security breach– Lalit Jha — and his co-accused wanted to create “anarchy” in the country to force the government to meet their demands, the Delhi Police told a court on Friday. According to sources, the police will seek Parliamentary approval to recreate the incident that took place on the anniversary of the 2001 attack. Five people have been arrested so far for the major security breach in Parliament involving smoke bombs and protests. Sagar Sharma and Manoranjan D were arrested from inside the Lok Sabha chamber, while Neelam Devi and Amol Shinde were detained outside the Parliament building. Parliament Security Breach: 8 personnel suspended from Lok Sabha for 13 December safety lapse

The Lok Sabha Secretariat Thursday suspended a total of eight personnel for security lapses on 13 December, 2023 when two people jumped into the chamber of the Lower House from the public gallery during Zero Hour, released yellow gas from canisters and shouted slogans before being overpowered by the MPs. Sources told News18 , the eight personnel have been suspended for dereliction of duty on Wednesday. Those suspended have been identified as Rampal, Arvind, Vir Das, Ganesh, Anil, Pradeep, Vimitt and Narendra. The major security breach occurred on the anniversary of the 2001 Parliament terror attack. The duo was identified as Sagar Sharma and Manoranjan D. Around the same time, two other accused — Amol Shinde and Neelam Devi — also sprayed coloured gas from canisters while shouting “tanashahi nahi chalegi” outside Parliament premises. The four men arrested in connection with the security breach in Parliament on Wednesday have been charged under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA), besides various sections of the Indian Penal Code. They will be produced in Delhi’s Patiala House Court later today. The Delhi Police Special Cell will also investigate various aspects including the educational background of the four accused, their involvement in past activities including any protests or rallies and whether they visited Parliament before yesterday’s incident. The Supreme Court on Wednesday said that CJI DY Chandrachud will take a call on the listing of Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader Mahua Moitra’s plea challenging her expulsion from the Lok Sabha. Mahua Moitra has been sent notice to vacate her official residence. The former MP and Trinamool Congress leader has challenged her suspension from Lok Sabha in a plea filed before the Supreme Court. Bengaluru saw the highest number of acid attacks against women in the nation in 2022, according to the most recent National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) report, with the city police registering six cases. According to APEDA, exports of agri-commodities, including basmati rice, fell to 17.93 lakh tonnes in September this year from 27.94 lakh tonnes the previous month. Agri-commodity exports in April and May totaled over 33 lakh tonnes apiece. However, due to multiple restrictions on the export of several varieties of rice, including broken rice and non-basmati white rice, shipments of farm commodities plummeted to roughly 18 lakh tonnes. According to data collected by the Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA), agricultural exports totaled 27.94 lakh tonnes in August of the 2023-24 fiscal year. In value terms, the export of farm items declined to Rs 14,153 crore during September from Rs 18,128 crore in August of this fiscal. Much of the exports in September were non-basmati exports which stood at 4.25 lakh tonne, basmati rice at 1.21 lakh tonne, fresh onions at 1.51 lakh tonne, and buffalo meat at 1,21,427 tonne, the data showed.
