The Women's quota Bill was introduced in the Lok Sabha on Tuesday. Prime Minister Narendra Modi termed 19 September a "historic day" and urged Opposition parties to pass the bill.
Tabling the Bill in the House, the law minister on Tuesday explained that once the Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam is passed, the number of seats for women in the Lok Sabha will increase to 181.
What does the Women's Reservation Bill proposes?
The Bill proposes 33 per cent representation for women in the Lok Sabha and state assemblies. After the debate, the bill is likely to be passed in the Lok Sabha later on Wednesday.
It will come into effect only after a delimitation exercise is completed and is therefore unlikely to be in force during the next Lok Sabha election in 2024.
