PM Modi condoles death of Prof Ved Prakash Nanda, prominent member of Indian diaspora in US

Prime Minister Narendra Modi Tuesday expressed his condolences over the passing away of Professor Ved Prakash Nanada, a prominent member of the Indian diaspora in the US.

Offering his condolences to the family members of Nanda, PM Modi said he was passionate about strong India-USA relations.

“Deeply saddened by the passing away of Professor Ved Prakash Nanda Ji, a distinguished academic whose contributions to the legal field are invaluable. His work highlights his strong commitment to legal education. He was also a prominent member of the Indian diaspora in USA and was passionate about strong India-USA relations. Condolences to his family and friends. Om Shanti,” PM Modi said in a post on X, formerly known as Twitter.

Who was Ved Prakash Nanda?

Nanda, an Indian-American academic, passed away on 2 January, 2024. He was serving as a John Evans Distinguished University Professor at the University of Denver, Colorado in the US.

He was also the Founding Director and Director Emeritus, International Legal Studies Program; and Director of Ved Nanda Center for International and Comparative Law, University of Denver Sturm College of Law.

He had also served as Vice President of the American Society of International Law.

Professor Nanda played crucial roles in the Indian diaspora in the USA for more than four decades. He has significantly contributed to the diplomatic ties between India and the US and his advocacy for strong relations between both the nations spanned three decades.

Nanda was awarded with Padma Bhushan in 2018 for his contributions to literature and education.

Back in 2006, Prof Nanda was honored with a $1 million founding gift from University of Denver alumni Doug and Mary Scrivner to launch the Ved Nanda Center for International and Comparative Law.

The Center began its academic endeavors in 2007, hosting programs for the lawyers, students, and community participants as well as promoting scholarship in the field of international law.
