Israel-Palestine War sparks heated political exchange as BJP trades barbs with Cong-left

The Israel-Palestine conflict has sparked a political debate in India, with the BJP emphasising the safety of the country under the leadership of Narendra Modi, comparing it with the days of the UPA government when terrorism and bombings were frequent. In response, the Congress has compiled a list of over 30 “terror attacks” since 2014.

The West Asia conflict and the stands taken by political parties and leaders have shed light on the challenges related to political ideologies within the INDIA Bloc. Shortly after the Modi government extended its support and solidarity for Israel following the attack and incursion by Hamas ‘terrorist’ groups from the Gaza Strip, Sitaram Yechury, the general secretary of CPM, criticized the ‘Israeli aggression’ of the ‘most Right-wing government.’

The Congress, on the other hand, issued a balanced statement condemning violence against Israel while expressing support for the Palestinian cause.

The BJP has suggested that the INDIA alliance should learn from the Israeli Opposition, which has wholeheartedly supported the Israeli Prime Minister’s retaliatory actions against Palestine. Shehzad Poonawalla, a spokesperson of the BJP, said that the Israeli Opposition prioritized their nation’s interests, whereas our own opposition, according to him, seems to endorse “opposition to Modi over opposition to the nation.”

He cited instances where they questioned surgical strikes, Balakot, and even absolved Pakistan of involvement in terror attacks.

The BJP leaders also countered the Congress’s tweet about over 30 terror attacks since 2014 by highlighting the strong measures, such as ‘surgical strikes,’ that have been taken in response to any provocations from Pakistan.

The current controversy arises following Congress’ recent handling of Udhayanidhi Stalin’s comments about ‘Sanatan Dharma.’

A senior Congress leader commented on Sitaram Yechury’s statement regarding the Israel-Palestine conflict, saying that Sitaram Yechury has expressed his opinion, which is acceptable to all of us. “Each constituent of the INDIA alliance has its own ideologies and political orientation. We cannot control them.” This statement acknowledged that members of the alliance hold diverse viewpoints, and Yechury’s stance might draw criticism from the BJP for not aligning with the country’s position.

Yechury condemned the attacks and counter-attacks in the Gaza Strip of Palestine, calling for the United Nations to safeguard the rights of the Palestinian people, the withdrawal of Israeli illegal occupation of Palestinian lands, and the implementation of the UN Security Council resolution for a two-nation solution.

He expressed his support for the Palestinian cause, highlighting the casualties on the Palestinian side in his statement while not addressing the extensive casualties in Israel caused by the attacks.

The statement by Congress followed later and was a ‘careful’ one, said political observers. Congress in its statement condemned “the brutal attacks on the people of Israel”. But it also maintained that the party had always believed that “the legitimate aspirations of the Palestinian people for a life of self-respect, equality and dignity must be fulfilled only through a process of dialogue and negotiations while ensuring the legitimate national security interests of the Israeli people. Violence of any type never provides a solution and must stop”. No other constituents of INDIA have reacted.

The Politburo of CPM later issued a statement, saying it condemned the attacks and counter-attacks between Hamas and the Israeli forces in the Gaza Strip of Palestine.

“Already, many human lives have been lost and the situation is poised to escalate causing more deaths, and miseries. This confrontation must end. The most right-wing Netanyahu government in Israel has been indiscriminately occupying Palestine lands and establishing Jewish settlements in the West Bank. So far this year, prior to this conflict, 248 Palestinian lives have been lost including 40 children,” it said.

The Politburo also said that it called upon the UN and the international community including the government of India “to ensure the immediate cessation of this conflict and act for the implementation of the UN”.
