Atal Bihari Vajpayee birth anniversary: Interesting facts about late Prime Minister

Atal Bihari Vajpayee, the tenth Prime Minister of India, was born on 25 December 1924 in Madhya Pradesh’s Gwalior. The late politician was a prolific writer and an eloquent speaker. He remains popular for his poems, most of which he wrote in Hindi. Vajpayee was elected to the position of Prime Minister in 1996 and twice in 1999. He was the first non-Congress Prime Minister to complete a full term in office. He was a member of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh as well, and served as a journalist for a short time before he joined the BJP.

On 23 December 2014, Vajpayee and Madan Mohan Malaviya were awarded the Bharat Ratna, the highest civilian award in the country. After the announcement, the Narendra Modi government declared that Vajpayee’s birthday would be celebrated as Good Governance Day. The veteran Bharatiya Janata Party leader passed away on 16 August 2018 after a prolonged illness.

  • Vajpayee was born into a Brahmin family, but he was fond of non-veg food. The prawn was his favourite food item.
  • He loved poetry since he was a child. Vajpayee wrote his first poem when he was in class 10.
  • Atal Bihari Vajpayee was imprisoned for 23 days for taking part in the Quit India Movement.
  • He was a close follower of Bharatiya Jana Sangh founder Syama Prasad Mukherjee.
  • Atal Bihari Vajpayee never got married. When he was asked the reason behind not marrying, he replied, “I stay so busy that I forgot.”
  • He was the first Indian politician to give a speech in Hindi at the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA).
  • India successfully conducted a nuclear test at Rajasthan’s Pokhran during his tenure as Prime Minister, called Operation Shakti.
  • Vajpayee was a Member of Parliament for 47 years. He was elected 11 times from the Lok Sabha and twice from the Rajya Sabha.
  • The veteran leader announced his retirement from politics in 2005.
  • In 2009, he suffered a stroke. His speech and hand movements were impaired after the incident.

New coronavirus variant emerge in India: How should our COVID response change?

After genome sequencing of over 10,000 COVID-19 cases in India, researchers have discovered a new variant with two new mutations which may be better at evading the immune system. In 15-20 percent of samples from the Indian state of Maharashtra (the state accounting for 62 percent of cases in the country) a new, double mutation in key areas of the virus has been detected. These are now known as the E484Q and L452R mutations. What makes the variant different? Both these mutations are concerning because they are located in a key portion of the virus – the spike protein – that it uses to penetrate human cells. Spike proteins attach via a “receptor binding domain”, meaning the virus can attach to receptors in our cells. These new mutations include changes to the spike protein that make it a “better fit” for human cells. This means the virus can gain entry more easily and multiply faster. Aditya L1 Mission: Spacecraft is nearing its final phase, says ISRO chief

Aditya L1 spacecraft is nearing its final phase, and manoeuvres to enter the L1 point are expected to be completed by January 7, 2024, according to ISRO Chairman S Somanath. “Aditya is on the way. I think it has reached almost its final phase,” the ISRO chief told PTI on the sidelines of an event organised at VSSC to commemorate the 60th year of the First Sounding Rocket Launch. Aditya L1, India’s first space-based mission to study the Sun, was successfully launched on September 2 from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre (SDSC) in Sriharikota. The spacecraft, after travelling about 1.5 million km from Earth over 125 days, is expected to be placed in a Halo orbit around the Lagrangian point L1, considered closest to the Sun.
