Maharashtra govt to make virginity tests for brides a punishable offence, calls practice a form of sexual assault

The Maharashtra government said that the practice of virginity tests for newlywed women will be considered a form of sexual assault. The home department will hold a bi-monthly review of cases of sexual assault, and ensure low pendency of such cases in the courts.
